This is 30-year-old Otiko – a young man with hair the color of sunlight and eyes the color of the sea. One ordinary evening, just as he was getting ready for bed, his friends drove past his house and asked him to go with them to Batumi.  At first, he refused, but when they asked again, he couldn’t say no – he didn’t want to offend them. That evening became the last time Otiko left home on his own… but he never managed to return.

A truck driver lost control and crashed into the car where Otiko was asleep in the back seat. In a single cursed moment, the life of this strong young man was turned into a nightmare.

Intensive care… silent doctors… And then the heartbreaking words: “There is almost no chance of saving him.” But the young man who grew up without a mother was sheltered by the protection of Virgin Mary, and a true miracle happened. Otiko survived.

But for four years now, the poor young man has been lying in a medical bed, unable even to move.

Look – the body of this once strong, vibrant young man has essentially turned into a skeleton.

And the most terrifying part is that Otiko is fully conscious and sees himself what has happened to his body. Perhaps there is no greater suffering for a human being. Yes… this is one of those cases when “hell itself has risen to earth” to torment a God-fearing young man.

When I, a journalist from the Chernovetskyi Fund, visited the Sabiashvili family home, I thought their tragedy began four years ago, when Otiko was injured in the accident. But the story his grandmother told me was so horrifying that for a moment I wondered if it was the script of a horror film.

Friends, prepare yourselves… because what I am about to tell you will stay in your memory like a nightmare.

It happened 20 years ago. Otiko was finishing the fourth grade. It was the day of the school celebration. His grandmother brought him to school, and his mother was supposed to arrive later… but she never came. The celebration ended, and Otiko’s mother still hadn’t appeared.

Back home, the child searched every room for her.

Finally, he cried out in despair: “Mommy, where are you, my dear mommy? I can’t fall asleep without you. Please hug me.” Twenty years have passed since then…

Now Otiko is 30, and he still searches for his mother with his eyes –  only now he cannot rise from this cursed medical bed.

This is a photo of Otiko’s parents. His mother was so beautiful and happy. Who could have imagined that mourning would soon descend upon the Sabiashvili family…

Even 20 years later, no one knows whether Otiko’s mother is alive. And if the poor woman has died, the unfortunate boy doesn’t even have a grave to visit. Lord, this is not just a tragedy –  it is worse than any tragedy.

And this is Otiko’s grandmother. A true heroine. Grandmother Neli has devoted her entire life to him and has raised him since he was ten as a real mother would.

Many mothers could not do for their child what this a woman of dignity has done. Most importantly, she raised Otiko to be a good man – his heart is full of kindness, love, and faith in God.

Neli (Otiko’s grandmother): “When Otiko was in intensive care, our house burned down.  When he was ready to be discharged from the clinic, I didn’t even know where to take my paralyzed grandson.  How could I leave him without a roof over his head? I turned to the Kaspi local government asking them to help at least set up one small room for Otiko in the burned house, but they refused.  ‘There are no means,’ they said. Since then, we’ve been renting a room. Caring for Otiko costs us almost 1,600 lari every month.

Dear reader, this heroic woman uses her pension to buy hygiene supplies for her grandson.

The rehabilitation Otiko needs is simply not available in Georgia – the country lacks the necessary medical equipment. The only path to saving him is treatment abroad, and that requires enormous expenses.

What should we do, friends? What would you advise? Abandon this boy, who grew up without a mother, halfway through his struggle? Condemn this kind, God-fearing young man to suffering for the rest of his life?
