Parkinson’s disease is painfully and slowly killing her most beloved and devoted son, Nukri – a handsome and courageous Georgian – right before the eyes of his 85-year-old mother.

Tamar, 85 (Nukri’s mother): “My dear, just tell me where it’s best to beg for alms,” whispers the proud Georgian woman to me. “Because there is nothing else I can do to help my love!”

When she was young, Nukri’s mother already buried one son… She received terrible news from the army – her boy was gone. He was only 20. A mother’s heart shattered.

And today, at 85, she watches her second son slowly die before her eyes… and can do nothing.

She used to sew blankets and mattresses when she was able to. She worked. She kept her family. And now… now she is paralyzed, abandoned in this world, barely breathing from pain – yet still caring for her beloved son.

Nukri earned his living through honest labor all his life. For 20 years he worked as a builder – his hands carried heavy bricks. And today those same hands betray him… He cannot even hold a cup of water.

Nukri, 56: “My hands shake so badly that I’m afraid I will fall… I can’t work, I can’t provide for my family… and that is unbearable.”

He trembles so much that he is afraid to hold his own grandchildren, afraid he might drop them.

Nukri, 56: “When I was young, I tried to break up a fight and was struck on the head. At first, the injury did not show itself… but 20 years later it came back as a terrible disease.”

Since 2014, he has been living on medication. Eight to ten pills a day – the maximum dose. He cannot take more. But even these only slow the disease for a short time. The surgery must be done now – while the medication still helps his body. Later, it may be too late.

With his head lowered, Nukri cries – harsh, masculine tears he held back all his life now burst forth, showing how frightening and exhausting this battle has become.

Only Nukri’s wife works in the family. Her salary (600 lari) barely covers food and medicine. And the life-saving surgery requires an enormous sum.

Nukri, 56: “I never lose hope that the Lord will help me.”
