The tears of a beautiful and unhappy 14-year-old Georgian girl, who bears the name of the Holy Mother of God, tear at the soul.

Her face is as gentle and beautiful as an angel’s. And her soul is even more fragile. I understood this in the very first minutes of our conversation with Mariam.

One cursed second robbed the girl not only of her hope for the future but also turned her carefree childhood to ashes. In the fire that broke out in the Gogishvili family home, everything this beautiful Georgian family had earned through years of honest work was burned to ashes.

As a correspondent of the Chernovetskyi Fund, traveling from Tbilisi to the village of Marani in the Abasha district to meet Mariam, I found myself quietly rehearsing words of comfort, hoping somehow to ease the child’s pain.

 “I believe, Mariam, that you will have a home bigger than before.  A more beautiful room and much better things.” That was roughly what I had planned to tell her.

But when I met Mariam face to face, I realized that no words of comfort could ease her pain. And do you know why? Because the girl was not grieving over the burned belongings or material loss.

Thank God, our Fund has found a solution for families who lost their homes in fires. A leading Turkish company will soon begin selling us comfortable houses like these for $7,000. We are happy to share, dear friends, that thanks to your heartfelt support we are confidently launching a fundraising campaign and have already signed a contract to purchase the first of these homes. What hurt her most was that the photographs of her late grandmother and the gifts she had once given her were destroyed in the fire. And at that very moment, I became fully convinced of what a huge heart this little girl has.

Mariam, 14: “I was born here. I grew up here. On this very land I first stood on my feet. Here I took my first step. Here I first said ‘Mama’ to my mommy.

When I sat on my grandmother’s lap and listened to her fairy tales – those feelings, those sweet memories burned in the fire.

‘If a person really wants to, they can buy valuable things again. But memories, emotions… Those cannot be bought.’

As I listened to Mariam’s words, a thought flashed through my heart: “How truly she lives up to the name of the Holy Mother of God.”

And this is Mariam’s brother, 16-year-old Giga. Exactly as a brother should be – polite, kind, well-mannered, and modest.

Look, this brave young man walks around in a torn T-shirt. All his clothes were burned in the fire. And Giga is at that very age when boys most of all want new jeans, new sneakers, and modern T-shirts. We have all gone through that age, and I think you will agree, dear friends, that it is true.

Pain… hopelessness…

This devout woman is the mother of Mariam and Giga. After speaking with her, I understood why the children she raised are so wonderful.

Maka, 46: I was very shy about calling your Fund. The reason was not that I was ashamed of my desperate situation, but that I felt uncomfortable troubling strangers.

Maka, 46: “Right now we rent housing for 400 lari. After the fire, when my children and I were left without a roof over our heads, I asked the local authorities to temporarily help pay the rent, but they refused.  Even so, I would never say that their children should experience the grief of being left without a roof. I would not wish such a fate even on the children of my worst enemy.”

Dear friends, the Gogishvili family’s social allowance is only 200 lari. Yet they pay 400 lari for rent. You probably understand yourselves that the children are going hungry… And an even greater tragedy is that they are no longer able to pay the rent.

What fate awaits this God-loving brother and sister?
