Tamar and Nodar are 64-year-old, sick, and desperately poor Georgian pensioners – kind-hearted, destitute, and forgotten by everyone. Across the entire beautiful land of Georgia, I, a journalist, have never met people as kind and as unfortunate as they are.

Surrounded by huge gray rats, spiders, and snakes, the elderly couple blames no one. They silently lie in their wet beds, covering themselves with umbrellas, the mattresses lined with plastic so they won’t get completely soaked.

When I – a journalist from the Chernovetskiy Fund – entered their house, which is full of holes on every side, I saw kind old Tamar sitting right in the middle of the room with an umbrella over her head. The roof is so damaged that it cannot protect them – the rain pours inside just as if they were outside. Plastic sheets cover the beds – otherwise everything would be drenched. It is impossible to sleep.

Tamar, 64: “We live as if we were in a desert! Surrounded by huge gray rats, spiders, and snakes – yet we blame no one. Everyone has forgotten about us… The only thing we truly fear is long rain. We are terrified that the old, rotten roof may suddenly collapse and bury us alive under the rubble.”

Instead of a proper roof, there are old slate sheets weighed down with concrete blocks, so the wind won’t blow them away.

Tamar, 64-year-old: “All our furniture comes from the dump – the sofas, the beds, the cabinets. It’s so humiliating, my dear… I never imagined I would face such an old age.  All I want is to live like a human being.”

And this is the chair they have to sit on.

Grandmother Tamar is weak and exhausted by illness. She suffers from a spinal hernia and a serious heart condition. Every step is painful for her. She can barely walk. She urgently needs surgery, but the Georgian Ministry of Health has strict rules – doctors will not accept a patient without examinations. And she has no money for the examinations.

Tamar, 64: “Another terrible thing is that my eyes can hardly see. I am going blind… My tears never dry… But the only person who sees them is my husband – and he himself is gravely ill.”

Tamar’s husband is also gravely ill. His lungs fill with fluid, and he suffers from attacks of suffocation. He cannot work and depends entirely on his wife.

Their grandson Erekle is now 24, but his life has been difficult since childhood. He is the son of their son. His parents divorced; soon after, his mother got married again and started a new life. His father was unable to care for a sick child. And so the boy was essentially left in the care of his grandparents. Grandmother Tamar and grandfather Nodar took him under their protection.
Since then, they have raised him, fed him, bathed him, and cared for him as if he were their own child.

It breaks your heart to see how Erekle, despite his illness, tries to make life easier for the people who have cared for him since the day he was born. He carries firewood so his grandparents will not freeze. He helps around the house however he can.

Tamar, 64: “Right now the only food in the house is stale bread. I don’t know what I will feed my husband and grandson. Thank God for our neighbors who sometimes share their meals – otherwise we would have died of hunger long ago.”

Grandmother Tamar washes everything by hand – bed linens, her husband’s and her grandson’s clothes. Every day she strains her back, scrubbing and wringing laundry with her own hands. Without a washing machine, it is exhausting work that never ends.

Tamar, 64: “And we don’t even have a bathroom. We bath in a basin right in the middle of the room.”

Dear friends of the Fund, this suffering family urgently needs help repairing their roof and building a proper bathroom. We cannot leave them alone.

Tamar, 64: “We hope that God will not abandon us. We hope that through kind people He will reach out and help us. I believe with all my heart that people will not turn away from us. I have done nothing bad in my life, yet I must endure such pain… Why is life so unfair?”

These people have lived honest lives. They have never harmed anyone. They simply found themselves face to face with misfortune. But we all know that in Georgia, not such a thing as someone else’s suffering. In Georgia, people don’t turn away when someone is in trouble – especially the elderly and the vulnerable. Today, the fate of this family is in our hands.
