She is 15 years old, and all fifteen of those years have been filled with suffering and constant pain.

At birth, she was diagnosed with diplegia  – a condition when the lower limbs are deformed and essentially paralyzed.

It is hard for Nnin to move. The pain never leaves her. She is now in the 10th grade, and despite everything, there hasn’t been a single day she has missed school because of the pain in her legs. More than that – she is an outstanding student, one of the best not only in her class, but in the entire school.

Nini lives in the village of Agara, about an hour drive from Tbilisi. Her school is far from home, so for the past 10 years she has had to wake up much earlier than other students – it takes her four times longer to walk there than it does for others.

In winter, when it snows and the roads are icy, she cannot make the journey, and her single mother has to call a taxi. This may seem like a small expense to some families, but for Nini’s family every lari matters – and here’s why: Nini’s 11-month-old sister, Mariam, is also seriously ill.

Nini’s sister Mariam – such a little sweetheart – will be waiting for you as well. She was born with a heart defect. Sooner or later, she too will need help.

Little Mariam spent nearly three weeks in the intensive care unit on the brink of life and death, but the Mother of God saved the girl who bears her name.

She survived, yet her condition remains serious to this day. When I, a journalist from the Chernovetskyi Fund, listened to Mariam’s breathing as she slept, I was shaken… Her tiny heart seemed as if it might leap out of her chest.

Tamar, 34: “I am raising three children alone. Two of them are seriously ill. I also care for my elderly, sick mother – she has no one else but me. Nini will graduate next year, and it breaks my heart when she says she doesn’t want to go to her graduation. The reason for that is obvious” (When the heartbroken mother said those words, it felt like her heart was being torn out with them).  No one deserves such suffering.

This is a window in Nini’s room. Instead of curtains, there is a blanket hanging over it.

And this is the ceiling – if it can even be called a ceiling.

You can see for yourselves, friends, how difficult this family’s situation is.

People who have known hardship are always kind to animals; even when they are hungry themselves, they still manage to find a piece of bread for a loyal dog.

There are times when the mother has no food for 11-month-old Mariam, who needs special nutrition that is very expensive.

And yet, this faithful family has never left the dog and her puppies hungry. That is what it means to have a heart full of kindness and love.

Dear friends, because of financial hardship, this single mother was unable to arrange Nini’s surgery in time. And the more time passes, the smaller Nini’s chances of walking become. Doctors abroad are already waiting for this bright, beautiful girl.

As I was leaving, I saw a spark of hope appear in Nini’s sea-colored eyes when she learned that the Fund’s friends would hear her story. Will you really let that hope turn into tears of disappointment?

After the surgery, she will also need a course of rehabilitation, which will take time. Nini will soon graduate from school. Will we really allow one of Georgia’s top students to miss the ceremony where she should receive her gold medal?

Yes, the surgery is expensive. But when kind people come together, even the impossible becomes possible. And 15,000 dollars is not an amount we cannot raise.
