A girl once full of life is now a blind, lonely woman, living in conditions that would be harsh even for a stray dog. But we’ll get back to this part of her life shortly, dear reader. For now, I want to tell you about the dramatic life of Nana.

Many years ago, in her youth, she fell deeply in love with a young man. He was from her region as well – an honest, hardworking young man. They were already talking about starting a family.

Nana Shalaberidze, 54: “Back then, I was very young and beautiful. I enjoyed life. I loved him like you only read about in novels. I was already planning what I’d wear on our wedding day. I dreamed of having many children. He said he loved me too. We were making plans for the future together.

And then, one morning, I found out he got married. It was like the sky fell and the ground vanished beneath me.”

Today, Nana is the loneliest woman in the world. Her first love was so strong that she could never love another. Or maybe, who knows, she could not – or would not – because she remained faithful to her first love… Yes… her first love… the first… that became the last.

After that terrible betrayal, Nana stopped going outside and lost trust in people. The girl once full of life slowly withered – just like a flower without water or sunlight. To make matters worse, Nana’s mother became bedridden due to illness.

Being an only child, young Nana cared for her mother completely alone. This went on for ten years.

Ten of the best years of a person’s youth, Nana spent within four walls. She could not go to the sea, or the mountains, or even the cinema.
She couldn’t attend birthday parties for her peers, because at home, there was no one else to bring water to her bedridden mother.

Life mercilessly trampled Nana. As a result of stress, humiliation, and constant tension, she gradually lost her eyesight, but without means, she could not afford the medicine prescribed by doctors. 

Today, Nana is almost completely blind. She can only see shadows.

The stress also took a toll on her body, affecting her health in many ways and causing the poor woman to gain weight. Today, it is difficult for her to move – both because of her blindness and the extra weight.

These are the flowers Nana first planted in her youth. After losing her sight, she naturally could no longer water them or care for them. Yet they still pushed through the soil and bloomed. They did not betray their caretaker. Sometimes flowers are more faithful than many people.

The most beautiful village in the Zestafoni region – Tskhratskaro. The house where Nana lives was built by her ancestors centuries ago.

Once, children’s laughter rang through the yard, and adults set large tables for celebrations.

In the evenings, by the fire, people competed in dances and songs. 

Back then, there were no phones, and the TV showed only black-and-white images. Even photographs taken by a traveling city photographer every few months were only black and white… Yet life itself was colorful.

Ah… of this once majestic house, only this remains.

The second floor. One step on the floor, and it would collapse completely.

Many years ago, the poor woman converted a storage room into a living space.

Seven square meters, a broken window, a rusty bed, and the ticking of a clock from the 20th century breaking the sad silence.

The blind woman struggles to light the gas stove to boil tea. Who can count how many times she has burned her hands?

Fund journalist: “If you could turn back time, what would you change in your life?”

Nana Shalaberidze: “I would not have given my love, my heart, to the person who did not deserve it.”

Fund journalist: “You couldn’t forgive him?”

 A long silence followed… a silence that shouted louder than words.

Nana Shalaberidze: “I will leave this world without becoming a mother or grandmother… What if children had called me ‘Mom’? What if in old age, I had held my grandchildren on my lap and told them stories? What if I had left this world so that someone would bring flowers to my grave?”

Fund journalist: “Nana, I’m sure that man will read this article too. What would you say to him for the first time in 30 years?”

(Pause… silence… and in her blind eyes, tears full of pain)…

Finally, after great effort, she whispered only these words: “I forgave him.”

Friends of the Fund, I believe that this single word – “Forgave” – is enough to understand what a remarkable person Nana is. This one magical word is enough to realize that the life of this virtuous woman, under such inhumane conditions, is the greatest injustice.
