Every breath Giorgi takes is a fight for life. 

Giorgi was born healthy. During his first month of life, he was no different from any other baby. But exactly one month later, his muscles became so weak that he could barely move his tiny arms and legs.

Then came the terrifying diagnosis: Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1 – the most severe form of this devastating disease. 

In all of Georgia, only six children had previously been diagnosed with this most aggressive form of SMA. Giorgi became the seventh.

Because of severe muscle atrophy, even the smallest movements are difficult for him. He cannot sit on his own. He cannot hold up his head, and it falls helplessly to the side. His ribs have sunk inward. Both hips are dislocated. His feet are so severely deformed that he must wear orthopedic braces. 

Doctors have also diagnosed him with kyphosis – a curvature of the spine that causes the upper back to bend forward. 

God… how can such a tiny angel endure so much suffering? And sadly, the list of illnesses does not end there. 

The greatest danger still lies ahead: Giorgi’s lungs cannot fully expand. Which means that any breath could become his last. Sadly, his condition has become much worse.

To keep Giorgi alive, two urgently needed medical devices must be purchased as soon as possible.

A Cough Assist machine, which helps clear mucus from his lungs. Right now, mucus has built up dangerously in his airways. 

A BiPAP breathing machine, which will help him breathe. This machine literally gives life.

The price of saving this little boy’s life is 50,000 lari. An amount a single mother could never raise alone. 

When a child cannot breathe, he cannot put his fear into words. He simply looks at his mother with terrified eyes… and struggles for air. 

Since the first moments of Giorgi’s life, his 25-year-old mother has fought this battle completely alone. But now even her strength is running out. This desperate mother is begging us to help save her son’s life.

At night, Lika wakes up in terror just to check whether her son is still breathing. 

Lika, 25 years old (Giorgi’s mother): “There is such a deep wound in my heart… But when I am beside my child, I try to smile. Giorgi is a very emotional and intelligent little boy. And at night, when my baby falls asleep, only my tears remain with me in this world.”
