Our hearts are breaking, friends… A devastating fire recently destroyed a family’s home within minutes, leaving parents and their young children with nowhere to live. The parents themselves often go hungry taking any temporary job they can find just to bring food home for their children.

“Daddy! Daddy! Daddy!” – 11-year-old Mariam cried through tears as she stood beside the burning house. More than anything in the world, the little girl was terrified of losing her father.

Mariam, 11 years old: “My mom and I were visiting someone. When we came back, there were fire trucks outside the house. Everything was covered in smoke and flames. But the most important thing is that my dad survived.”

This is what the family’s home looked like after the fire. 

11-year-old Mariam says she can no longer see with one eye. And the vision in her second eye is slowly getting worse as well. 

Mariam, 11-year-old: “My eye hurts and burns so much… But my mom cannot take me to a doctor because we do not have the money…”

Now Mariam wears the same clothes every day and dreams about simple things: new shoes, school supplies, and toys. She says other children laugh at her eyesight and her clothing. 

Gokhar is raising three children and also helping care for two grandchildren.

Even before the fire, the family survived only on a pension and social allowance. Together with her husband, she took seasonal jobs harvesting potatoes, saving every tetri and sacrificing their own needs just to feed the children.  

According to the mother, the fire started because of a short circuit. And within minutes, the family lost everything they had spent years building through hard work. 

The appliances they had bought on credit burned.
Their clothes burned.
The furniture, dishes, television, and water heater were all destroyed.

Gokhar, 37-year-old: “I have no way to bathe my children before school… I do not want other children to laugh at them or say they smell bad…”

Friends, this family deserves to feel proud of their homeland again – to feel like respected people of great Georgia. The children deserve their sense of dignity back, and their parents deserve simple human happiness and faith that justice and kindness still exist in this world. Now this house needs to be filled with life and joy again. The family urgently needs a water heater, a washing machine, a refrigerator, a television, clothing, food, and at least one phone for the household. And most importantly – Mariam needs to see a doctor.

Thank God for the family’s kind neighbors, who are helping rebuild the home. The family is also deeply grateful to the mayor of their town. Can you imagine? He personally helped restore the roof.

Friends, we are not speaking about comfort or luxury.
We are speaking about children not being mocked.

About children not growing up believing they are “less than others.” 

Lord, help us fight indifference.  Do not let Your children walk past another person’s suffering.
