“Please! I’m a girl just like you… just wearing ugly clothes. It is difficult for me to walk, my legs hurt, and my back hurts, but I can endure it. Do you know what hurts the most? When they point at me and laugh at me. They tell me that they do not want to be friends with me, because my clothes are torn. Because I don’t study as well as they do. Because it is difficult for me to walk. I endure it so as not to cry, but when I come home and no one sees me, I will bury myself in the pillow and cry.”

How to comfort a girl? What to tell her – tell her that everything will be fine, that her classmates and people passing by will suddenly become kind? Or can we change her life so that she will not pay attention to the people with evil tongues? We will manage to become friends with little Ia and show her that no one should scoff at torn clothes and physical defects; make her feel that we love her and want to be friends with her.

The Diasamidze family has so many problems that it is easier to list the problems which they don’t have. They do not have their own home, and they have to constantly move. Now one friend will shelter them for several months, then another. They can’t even pay rent for the apartment. Their only income is social allowance, which is barely enough to prevent the children from starving to death!

And now let me tell you about everything in order. Let me introduce you this wonderful family.

– Sofia, please, introduce us to your family.

Sofia: There are four of us: me, my husband, Ia who is very sick – she is 11 years old, and Iago – he is seven. We live in misery!!!

– Let’s start with the Ia’s problems. What is wrong with her?

Sofia: Ia was born with cerebral palsy and could not walk. When the baby was two years old, she was operated on her legs and spine. We spent everything we had on rehabilitation. I am happy that after a long and hard work, my girl became able to walk independently. She does it with difficulty, she has a drag in walk, but it’s better than not walking at all. When Ia was ten years old she was operated on for a second time, and it also brought results. But after operation we were left with completely no means – a proper rehabilitation is entirely out of the question. We make exercises at home, train, but this is not enough. She also has pains, and I cannot always provide her with painkillers. It seems to me that sometimes, she just does not even tell me when she feels pain. She is smart beyond her age and she understands what situation we are in.

– She told me that they laugh at her at school.

Sofia: It is true. It hurts her so much! It inflicts mental anguish on her. She comes tear-stained from school, hugs me and says: “I’m happy that you are my mother!”. Then I burst into tears. Do you know how hard it is when you can’t give your children a normal life? Imagine how hard it is for her to come into terms with the fact that she is not like anyone else, that she is sick. They also laugh at her because of our dire financial situation. Imagine – she is not dressed like a princess… You know, we do not even dream of buying new clothes. Children have to wear rags, and sometimes – torn shoes.

– What do you live on, or better say how do you manage to survive?

Sofia: Social allowance and our daughter’s pension are our only income, but we do not get the entire pension. A year ago, when Ia was operated on, we had to take a bank loan and now half of the pension is taken by the bank. Ia needs 100 GEL worth medications every month, she cannot do without them. Children are deprived of everything. We refuse them almost everything. When Iago asks me for candy, I tell him that I will buy it later. And this ”later” never comes…

Iago: I don’t need anything! Yesterday they treated us to sweets.

– What are you dreaming about?

Iago: About nothing. (After saying this, Iago ran out of the room.)

Ia: And I dream about many things!

– Please, tell me about everything. Apparently, Iago does not like talking.

Ia: I’m embarrassed, but I’ll tell you. First of all, I will speak for my mother, otherwise she will not speak herself, like Iago. She needs a washing machine and a refrigerator.

(At this time, Iago approached Ia and whispered something in her ear. And he ran away again.)

Ia: How funny! He said he wanted a TV, only warned me not to tell you this …

– And what do you want for you, Ia?

Ia: You know, sometimes I think about what I want the most. I even have a list in my head. My first dream is a tablet or a computer. I don’t go to school often, and I really need it.

– Why do you miss lessons?

Ia: Well, I don’t really like it there, you know. Everyone laughs at me. They used to giggle behind my back, saying that I was dressed like an old granny, that I am a beggar. Then they started to tell me that directly to my face. I got used to that. But still, I feel offended. They also laugh that I have no notebooks and pens, that my parents are poor.

– Do you take it to heart?

Ia: You know, I used to take it to heart. But now – no. Can I address those who hurts not only me that way, but others as well?

-Sure!

Ia: I want to tell them that we did not choose such a life… Things not always go the way we want them to go. I don’t want much. I want to have friends, to have someone to talk to, chat, discuss books. I really like reading and drawing. And I just dream of a big library and an easel with paints!

– You are very smart girl! Such thoughts at your age – not many adults will be able to express their emotions as you do! I am sure that after the publication of this article you will get real friends!

Sofia: Ia thinks and reflects a lot. She loves reading and she writes out interesting phrases from books.

– Sofia, please tell me, what do you need and how can we help you?

Sofia: Well, as Ia said, we really need a washing machine and a refrigerator. The children would be happy to have a TV set. Ia needs a simulator, but it’s very expensive. We have one, but it is very difficult to practice on it. Foodstuffs, medications, clothes… Oh, I am embarrassed. The main thing is that my children were happy. I want Ia to have real friends. And thank you for coming and talking to me. Thank you!
