Don't take off your jacket," he asks the correspondent, "it's cold for us. Outside is much warmer than at our home. When the sun is out during winter days, my grandmother and I often warm up outside! At home, we wear everything we have and huddle under a blanket!
They stand alone in this world: elderly and frail grandmother Elsa alongside 9-year-old Georgi. After the death of their mother, their father drowned his sorrows in alcohol, then contemplated suicide. However, another woman intervened, and he left for her!
Elsa: Giorgi was in his dead mother's womb for 5 minutes! It's an indescribable tragedy! We were so happy when we learned that we would have a grandson. And now, we are alone, facing such poverty that sometimes there's not even a crust of bread in the house. How many times has my unfortunate grandson gone to school hungry?
Giorgi: Once, I felt very sick at school, and for 2 days, I was hungry. The school principal bought me khachapuri. He is kind, and I study well! The only problem is that many kids make fun of me! They say I have a girl's backpack, and my shoes are torn. But my grandmother has no money. I wear what we've been given!"
Giorgi: "I'm really afraid that the ambulance won't make it in time, and my grandmother will die."

Elsa: While my husband was alive, life wasn't so difficult for us. But, two years ago, he died from Covid. Words can't describe what we went through during that time. And that's how we were left alone. Now, there's no money for anything. So many times, my unfortunate grandson went to school hungry. So many times, we didn't even have a crust of bread.
- Elsa, how can we help you?
Elza: With warmth and food! That's the most crucial thing. So that we don't die from cold and hunger. I'm not asking for myself; it's for Giorgi. I'm already halfway in the grave.
Giorgi: For me, the most important thing is to always have my grandma. I want her to never die!
- We will do everything possible to improve your life. Besides warmth and food, do you need any other household items that could make your life easier?
Elsa: All our household appliances have broken down; we have no refrigerator, no TV. The beds are in terrible condition, and my grandson has no clothes or shoes.
Giorgi: Can I have a regular 'boyish' school backpack? And warm footwear?
- Do you have more cherished dreams, perhaps?
Giorgi: Yes. I dream of having a tablet, but can I have one? Sometimes, I dream of a bicycle, and sometimes of a remote-controlled helicopter. But most of all, I dream of growing up and becoming a 'rescuer and helper' for people. If someone is in trouble, I'll come and solve all their problems.
- Wow, that's amazing! Do you know someone who saves everyone and helps everyone?
Giorgi: Yes, I know one. His name is God! And I will be His helper. But for now, we need help, my grandma and me. I know God has many helpers, and He will send them to us.
Death looms as a shadow around this house. Here, it's not just the people who freeze; it's their hopes as well. But in this cold, there is a thread of hope. When we extend a helping hand to this boy and his grandmother, we build a bridge between God and our hearts. Together, we can write a new chapter in their lives, filling it with the light of love, care, and warmth.
'Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done.' (Proverbs 19:17). In our hands lies the power to change Giorgi's life, and for that, only a little is needed. To settle the gas debt, install a heater, buy a refrigerator and fill it with groceries. Purchase new beds and warm blankets. And fulfill all of Giorgi's wishes. He has suffered enough, and we can make his suffering a little less.
