0901200270“I’m only 16,” – Saba told me, covering his face with his hands. “Thank God that doctors abroad might finally work a miracle on my face- because I no longer want to live, scaring people with how I look. I’d rather not live at all! I don’t want pity, I don’t want people to fear me or turn away when they see me. What kind of life is that?”

“This is what I dream of becoming. Please God, let it happen! The problem is, I don’t have any money yet.”
We can give a new face to this beautiful Georgian boy who is suffering so deeply that even the journalist interviewing him cried.
“It hurts to breathe. It hurts to eat.” -this is the whisper of a 16-year-old boy. While his peers are picking out outfits for graduation, Saba is hiding at home, avoiding mirrors, not going outside, and hasn’t been to school for several months. He is ashamed of his face…
He didn’t scream. He didn’t cry. He whispered it once: “Mom, why did I get this face?”
And, in that moment, his mother’s heart broke.
This story isn’t just about illness. It’s about the pain behind every breath. It’s about a boy who’s been fighting for the right to a normal life since birth.
He cannot chew properly. He cannot breathe freely. He cannot smile, because everything hurts.
“When he was little boy, he didn’t know anything was wrong. But then he began noticing the looks. He started hiding. He became silent,” – says his mother, Pikria. Her voice is filled with exhaustion that no medicine can cure. Her eyes overflow with endless love and fear.
Saba was born with a harelip and cleft palate. At eight months, he underwent a cosmetic surgery but the internal defect remained. Sixteen years have passed, and he still suffers:
Every smile causes pain. Every bite is a struggle.
Saba(16-years-old): “I hate mirrors. When I look into one, I see something excluded from this world. Sometimes, I hate myself along with the mirror.”
“When we went to doctors in Georgia, we were told to wait until he grew up. So we waited. Now they say it’s too late- they can’t perform this surgery here. Only doctors in Turkey are willing to help,” explains Pikria, clutching the medical records.
A Turkish clinic has agreed to perform full facial reconstruction: bone grafting, maxillofacial surgery, and orthodontic treatment.
The cost is $12,400. For a family without even a refrigerator (borrowed from neighbors), this amount feels like a death sentence.
They live in a single room. The father does odd jobs. The mother suffers from spinal hernia and scoliosis. They receive almost no social support. They’ve already raised about 3,000 GEL through Facebook and help from Saba’s school. But time is running out.
“I just want my son not to be ashamed of himself. He is beautiful. He is strong. He only wants to breathe. He wants to live like boys his age. And if he ends up looking even a little like the photo the doctors promised, I would kiss the hands of his rescuers!” – says the mother, through tears.
Saba: “I am asking people for help. I am asking for air. I am asking for life.”
If this surgery is not performed, there is a high risk of infection in his oral cavity, which could severely restrict his breathing.
The family applied for assistance to the Georgian Ministry of Health almost two months ago- but have not received a response. The Ministry funded his first surgery at 8 months, and now, according to Pikria, they are investigating why a second operation is necessary and why the child’s surgery in 2009 cost 15,000 GEL.
As the family waits for the Ministry’s response, time is running out. If they don’t pay the Turkish clinic by the end of the month, the case will be closed. They will have to start the process again an extremely expensive and time-consuming effort. And Saba doesn’t have that time. Doctors warn that the older he gets, the harder the surgery becomes.
Every caring heart, every repost, every donation is a breath of air for Saba. $12,400 – one surgery – one life saved. Please help! Share! Support!
Pikria: “And when my beloved son looks into the mirror every morning, he will pray for each and every person who showed him compassion in his darkest hour.”
