0901200270“Mama, are they really going to cut off my leg? But how will I run without a leg?! Help me, Mama! You said you love me more than anyone in the world! Can I run just once more before the operation? Just a little bit, Mama!
REPOST RIGHT AWAY, MY GOOD MAN! HELP YOUR FRIENDS FIND THE WAY TO GOD!
“Mama, are they really going to cut off my leg?” – that’s what 7-year-old Demetre asked his mother. Not in a hospital. Not under anesthesia. But during an interview, while I was speaking to his mother, Marina.
She froze. She froze. I saw her hold her breath, press her lips together, fighting back tears – so her son wouldn’t see her fear.
Demetre looked up at her with his big, sad eyes – eyes that no longer held childhood or lightness, only pain and expectation. He was waiting for his mother’s answer.
She knew if she stayed silent, he’d cry too. So she gathered all her strength and said: “Kind people will help us. God won’t let this happen, okay? Don’t worry – we’ll get through this, my son…”
And he quietly asked: “Will I be able to run again? Will I still have a chance to become a footballer?” After he looked at me – as if he was hoping I could give him an answer.
Demetre’s mother, Marina: “It started when he was six. He complained about feeling tired in one leg. No bruises, no pain – just a feeling as if something was breaking inside. The traumatologist refused to do an X-ray. He prescribed painkillers and a brace.”
But the pain didn’t go away. He couldn’t play anymore, couldn’t run, couldn’t sleep. After three weeks, the leg got swollen. Ointments. Compresses. Ice. Nothing helped. After months they finally did an X-ray. And then came the shock: a benign aneurysmal bone cyst. It had already begun to destroy the bone from within. While the doctors were wasting time, the disease was destroying his leg.
Marina: “In December, they did a lavage. In January, the bone broke – because there was almost nothing left.”
That’s when the family took him to Turkey as their last hope.
The Turkish doctors were stunned when they saw the scans:
“How is he even still standing?”
They’ve already been to Turkey three times. The cyst was removed. They built the foundation for a bone graft. But the most important surgery is still ahead. And without it, Demetre will become permanently disabled. The cost is $28,000.
The Ministry of Health and the Tbilisi City Hall have already helped the family cover around $20,000 for previous operations. But there’s been no answer so far for this final, most crucial surgery. In fact, they’re losing hope—the support limit may already have been reached.
Today, Demetre can’t walk properly. It hurts just to stand. He’s scared. And he understands everything.
He doesn’t ask for toys. He just whispers to his mom: Demetre (to the Fund’s correspondent): “Will I be able to run again? Will I have a chance to become a footballer?”
Demetre dreams of playing football. He can spend hours watching Kvaratskhelia score goals. He doesn’t want presents – he wants sneakers and a green field.
But now, there’s a cast instead of a ball. A hospital room instead of a jersey. And a sentence instead of cheering: if he doesn’t get surgery soon, there will be no bone left—his leg will be amputated. And then… he’ll never run again. His dream will die.
It’s important to know this too: Demetre and his sister Mariam are a miracle. Their parents couldn’t have children for over 20 years. They went through countless treatments, tears, hopes, and heartbreaks. And finally—they had twins.
Demetre and Mariam are the children they waited for their whole lives. And now one of those precious lives hangs by a thread.
The family has sold everything they could. A year ago, his father stopped going to Germany – where he worked bringing from there furniture for sale. He stayed by his son’s side. They live off savings now. They still have an old minivan – but they can’t sell it. It’s the only way they can take Demetre to Turkey for treatment. It’s their only connection to hope.
What they’re asking for isn’t a miracle. It’s help. A chance. A right to a normal childhood. A right to run.
Today, Demetre can’t stand properly. He can’t play. He can’t live like other kids. But he doesn’t complain. He stays strong. He dreams: of a green field, of his first goal, of hearing the crowd shout: “Demetre scores – GOAL!”
He promised his twin sister that he’ll play tag with her again after his surgery. “Sister, kind people came today – so that means my surgery is soon. And we’ll run and play together again.”
He quietly says this to her over the phone while I speak with his mother.
If you care – please help. Share. Donate. Help him stand again. Let the answer to his question—
“Mama, they won’t cut off my leg, right?” – be: “No, my son. Never.”
