“Eat the tastiest part – just leave me just a little crust of bread! A tiny one! You’re kind, aren’t you, auntie?” With these words, a handsome but painfully thin Georgian boy named Lazare greeted me at the door. He was so traumatized by hunger that he didn’t talk until the age of four. Can you imagine, friends, what his devoted mother had to go through?

Lazare (4-year-old): “I want to eat! I’m really hungry, and my tummy hurts! Please, give me just a little crust of bread!”

A four-year-old should be carefree — laughing, playing, enjoying childhood… But Lazare, with tears in his eyes, thinks only about food. Sometimes he walks with his mother to the nearby deli just to look at the food and dream about it. “Oh, auntie, it smells so good! Let’s go – let’s go smell it!”

Maia, mother (42 years old): “If it weren’t for our neighbors, my son and I would have probably starved to death long ago. They’re kind people – they share their lunch with us.”

Lazare: “I hide under this bed when it rains from the ceiling. Where do you hide?”

This child has never known a different life. He truly believes everyone lives like this.

Lazare: “Be careful. Walk quietly – or the ceiling will fall on your head!”

“God, he’s so beautiful!” — the thought flashed through my mind.

His mother quietly cries when he’s not looking. But Lazare sees everything… and tries to comfort her: “Mommy, don’t cry! When I grow up, I’ll get a job and buy you the tastiest food!” And with his thin, weak little arms, he hugs her tightly.

There’s absolutely nothing in their home: no stove to cook on, no TV, no fridge, no washing machine, not even a phone to call an ambulance, no toys for this beautiful little boy. Neither Lazare nor his mother have warm clothes for winter – let alone a bicycle. They don’t even have a home of their own. A kind-hearted believer gave them shelter.

Lord, help this family where love and faith still live! They never complain about life. They think that as long as they are not sick – they’re fine. They survive on 320 lari a month. Though I’m sure even that money doesn’t always come – they’re drowning in debt. But proud Maia refused to talk about anything… except food for her son. Please, friends, try asking her yourselves – maybe you’ll succeed.

I thought – there are eight billion people on this planet – and yet this mother and son are completely alone. They have no one to rely on. When our Fund’s reporter asked Lazare about his father, he quietly said he had never seen him. We didn’t ask about him again.

Maia: “I don’t have my own home. I don’t even have money for rent. Thank God for kind people – they took us in. Otherwise, we’d be on the street.”

This mother and her little boy dream of a normal life… But they don’t even have the bare essentials. Maia bathes her son right in the middle of the room – a room with no windows. That’s where she does the laundry, too. In the summer they suffocate from the heat; in the winter they freeze without heating.

What can we do to ease their suffering? First – we’ll buy this little boy some “crusts” – food he’s never even tasted or seen. We must feed this starving child as soon as possible.

It’s critically important to:

Build a bathroom in the house and install hot water;

Get a small washing machine and fridge;

Buy beds, some furniture, put in new windows, and fix the ceiling. The family will be grateful for any help.

Please, show some mercy. Right now, the place where this sweet mother and her little boy live looks more like an animal pen in a zoo than a human home.

But after Maia turned to our fund, she finally has hope! And how could we – with so many of us together – refuse to give her that hope? We can help – quickly and effectively – and give Lazare and his mother a future. Believe me, Lazare will never forget your kindness. He will carry gratitude in his heart for the rest of his life. And one day, he’ll pass on this chain of kindness and light. And the world will become a little bit better. This sweet, humble, good little boy can do it. We believe in him!

Before leaving, our reporter asked Lazare one last question:

– Lazare, do you believe there are kind people in the world?

Lazare: Kind people? What are they like?

– They’re the ones who’ll buy you everything you dream about. Even a bicycle!

Lazare: I believe, I do! Sometimes my friends let me ride their bikes or watch TV with them. Of course kind people exist! Everyone around here is kind!

– That’s exactly why I came – to tell good people about your dreams.

And then… a spark lit up in his sad, sea-colored eyes. On the way from Senaki to Tbilisi, our Fund’s reporter kept thinking: “What if Lazare’s hopes don’t come true?” Friends — it all depends on you. Now, Lazare will be waiting for every new morning, hoping that one day, he’ll wake up to the smell of food he’s only dreamed about until now.
