85-year-old grandmother Natela spent her whole life working hard and caring for others. And now, in her old age, she has found herself in a nursing home, helpless. She needs the most basic things. She has no one left in this world, and no one will help her – except us!

Kind and gentle as an angel, 85-year-old grandmother Natela lives in a nursing home. She is completely alone. No parents, no brothers, no sisters – they have all passed away. She never had a family or children of her own.
– Do you regret never marrying, grandmother Natela?
Natela (85 years old): I do regret it, my dear. Very much so. Love each other, create families, and have children while you are young. Life passes very quickly. Otherwise, you may be abandoned to fate like me. I wouldn’t wish a lonely old age even on my worst enemy.
– If you could start life over again, what would you change?
Grandma Natela: I would get married, and perhaps I would have children. Then at least there would be someone to bring me a glass of water in my old age.
Grandma Natela: “I am completely helpless, my child! I take one or two steps and fall. Two days ago, I lost my balance and fell again. Now my lower back hurts terribly. Without a cane, I cannot get up, and moving around is so hard for me.”
Poor, poor soul… and yet so much kindness shines in her eyes!
Grandmother Natela is very shy to ask for help. For many years she worked as a shop assistant in a grocery store. She fed her family, friends, and even strangers, helping however she could. And now, in the nursing home, she herself is fed with a spoon. The ways of the Lord are mysterious, friends. None of us knows what old age awaits us. We cannot ignore her suffering. We cannot stay indifferent to the fate of someone who once shared everything she had so generously.
Grandma Natela: “My dear, I can no longer eat solid food – I am afraid of choking. My gums hurt terribly, because my dentures are very, very old. I need a dentist, but I have no money for examination or treatment. If kind people could help me, I would be so grateful. May the Lord bless you all!”
Despite all her hardships, there is still a spark of hope in grandmother Natela’s eyes – that the world has not abandoned her, that there are people ready to extend a helping hand.
Friends, we can become the family grandmother Natela never had. To warm her heart, all it takes is a little attention, a little care, a little kindness.
Together we can raise funds for the medicines she needs, adult diapers, hygiene supplies, comfortable clothing, and, most importantly, a visit to the dentist so desperately needed by this grandmother exhausted by suffering. Because she deserves to live the last years of her life as a human being should.

Grandma Natela so wants to look beautiful for you! This morning, she washed her hair and put in her new dentures. What worried the Fund’s friends most of all was that she couldn’t eat without teeth, was afraid of choking, and so they paid for her visit to the dentist and a new dentures.
And a woman will always be a woman! It’s wonderful that Grandma Natela remembered how beautiful she was in her youth, smiled at her reflection in the mirror, and then smiled at us too. And she began to sing “Tsitsinatela” – “Firefly” in Georgian. Because Grandma Natela truly is a very bright soul.
She was even in the mood for a joke and told the Fund’s correspondent: “Now I’ve got a real Hollywood smile. If I’d had these teeth when I was young, a prince would have married me!” And she laughed with all her heart. And the sadness that had lived in her eyes for 85 long years suddenly melted away. Friends of the Fund, for bringing such happiness to Grandma Natela, the universe will surely prepare a big surprise for you.
You gave her a walker to help her move more easily, and she remembered her proud posture. Even on that short walk – from the dining hall of the nursing home to the shared bedroom – she now walks with dignity.
She has decided: she will be beautiful and smiling for you! Because every person needs to be that someone for somebody else. And she will shine for you, like a firefly! When she lies down in her brand-new wooden bed, with its orthopedic mattress, wrapping herself in a soft new blanket, Grandma Natela wishes her new friends a long life – at least 85 years, as many as she has, and beyond that, as long as you wish yourself. 
She praised her new electronic blood pressure monitor – it works quickly. Even the device seemed to show joy and excitement, with her pulse running a little fast. You brought diapers, medicine, and food.
LETTER OF GRATITUDE FROM THE NURSING HOME
The hardest part for her is saying goodbye. The filming is over, the equipment packed. And in Grandma Natela’s eyes you see something left unsaid, a sadness, a fear – that the love and attention might suddenly end, and she’ll be left alone again in the nursing home. But she needs someone to tell – that her back hurts terribly and she needs a brace, that she needs a new walking cane. I felt that crushing sadness in her embrace, as I stroked her hair.
“No one knows what lies ahead,” my little firefly told me.
No one knows what awaits in old age, friends.
