The money painstakingly saved for six-year-old Magda’s treatment was destroyed in the fire – along with the family’s home.

Now this seriously ill little girl can only plead with us for help through her eyes.

This is Magda. She comes from Khulo, a high-mountain community known for its hardworking and kind-hearted people. While playing, Magda lost her footing and fell from a height. She suffered a severe head injury.

Her injuries were so severe that doctors had to remove part of her skull during surgery. After the surgery, Magda’s hardworking family struggled to save every penny for her treatment. Her father worked as an electrician, putting aside every cent he earned so his daughter could recover.

But in that terrible fire, it wasn’t only money that was lost. The hope of restoring this little Georgian girl’s health went up in flames.

Five little children from the Shavadze family escaped the devastating fire by a miracle – only by God’s grace were they spared from burning alive. For now, the family has taken refuge in this small wooden cabin.

I, a journalist with the Chernovetskyi Fund, will never forget the words of little Linda: 

“Auntie, we saved our cows and chickens so they wouldn’t burn in the fire. It would have hurt them too.”

Lord, how did You fit such a loving heart into such a tiny child?

This is ten-year-old Barbare. As I looked into her eyes, I could see that she fully understood the tragedy that had struck her close-knit family.  

When I told her that Georgia would come together to help them through this terrible time, she smiled so warmly – as though everything had already turned out well. She believed me. We cannot let her down. 

Today, these children’s lunch consists of nothing more than matsoni and bread. Yet their eyes tell you they dream of sitting around a table with enough food for everyone. Don’t these children deserve that?

Barbare ,10-year-old: “Auntie, everything burned in the fire. The only clothes we have left are the ones we were wearing.”

Fortunately, the people of the mountains are rich in kindness. Although the Shavadze family’s neighbors have very little themselves, they still share what little they have. 

Together, they have managed to start rebuilding their home on the site where the old one once stood. Sadly, the money they were able to raise was only enough to build the walls. The local authorities have promised the family 15,000 lari. At the Chernovetskyi Fund, we believe that promise will soon be fulfilled, and we ask everyone to join us in helping this family. They need a home where they can live safely among these mountains and through the long snowy winters.

Unfortunately, the cost of building materials has risen so sharply that the assistance promised by the local authorities will most likely not even be enough to build a roof.

Everything great in this world is made up of countless small acts. We know that many of our donors will understand this family’s struggle.

Linda, 4-year-old: “Auntie, did you really come all the way from Tbilisi to Khulo?”

Fund journalist: “Yes, my little one.”

Magda: “I saw on television that girls in Tbilisi wear beautiful dresses to concerts.”

The moment I heard those words, I understood what she truly dreamed of – a beautiful princess dress. She was simply too shy to ask for one.

How painful it is to see a child who doesn’t dare speak her dreams aloud, yet tells you everything with her eyes. The dreams of a poor child are quiet. Yet they are so powerful that I believe they reach Heaven itself.

Exhausted, the children help their mother work the land. Instead of playing, their tiny fingers pull weeds from the soil.

At the end of the day, as we were leaving the mountain village of Khulo, Barbare asked me to pass on a message to all of you. I promised I would, so I will repeat her words exactly as she said them:

“My dear friends I’ve never met, the ones who live in the cities, I invite you to visit Khulo this summer. Stay at my home. We have beautiful mountains and waterfalls here. I’ll show you all the most beautiful places.”

As she spoke, the warmth and joy in her eyes suddenly gave way to sadness.

I didn’t ask why. I already knew. She had remembered that her home had been reduced to ashes.

I left Khulo with a heavy heart. The golden sun disappeared behind the mountains, and rain began to fall. As I watched the raindrops, one question would not leave my mind:

“Rain, where were you when the home of five little children was burning? Heaven, why didn’t you send this rain when the flames were destroying the money their family had worked so hard to save for Magda’s treatment?”
