Since childhood Lavrentiy Kuchukhidze has a
serious form of brain fever. Because of her constant illness he did not manage
to receive secondary education. He never played with children in the yard, but
watched everything from his window. He has always needed assistance from other
people; it was hard for him to eat, put on any clothes, wash himself… Till her
great age she had been taking care of her ill son, and when he passed away
Lavrentiy had two blood strokes which paralyzed him and made him bedridden.
Then he was diagnosed with diabetes and completely lost his eyesight.

In order to support the lonely blind and
disabled old man, his sister Juli moved to him. So now the 80-year old feeble
old lady with a number of incurable diseases which herself can hardly move
about the room is bedsitting her 74-year old brother!

Their living conditions are horrible: the room
is damp and cold. Their tiny pension does not suffice for heating; it is hardly
enough for food and vitally necessary medicines. That is why only one lamp is
on in their dwelling, and it is very dim. Lavrentiy says that this lamp gives
him warmth. This half-starving blind old man is lying in the cold and
uncomfortable premises under a pile of shabby blankets!

If you are a truly kind person having the
special gift of feeling other people’s sorrow you would surely imagine the
horror and despair of the situation of Mr. Lavrentiy and his selfless sister!
