What emotions do you experience when you see this baby with a piece of meat in his hands – the most luxury thing his family has?
Sadness? A pity? Pain? Fear? It’s weird, isn’t it? When we asked him “What are you dreaming about?” 5-year-old Lazare took us to the refrigerator and answered: ‘Look! I want us to often have delicious meat!”

0901200270This photo could be a calling card of all socially disadvantaged families where the children just dream to have some delicious food. And sometimes not even delicious – just some food.
There are five children in this family – beautiful, talented, well-mannered … Lazare is 5 years old – he has two more brothers and two sisters. Keti is 10 years old, Luka is 12, Lizi is 14, and the oldest Rezy is already 15. The children have loving parents – mother Inga and father Badri.
The ruins where the family lives now used to be a stable. How did they find themselves here? They simply did not manage to pay rent. They arbitrarily moved to this dilapidated building.
Let’s tell all in order: how do these people live, what do they rejoice about, and in what do they see salvation – people which the state does not consider to be people!
“Long ago my husband and I dreamed of building a house and living happily. But now, as you see, we don’t even have food for our children,” says the poor woman and throws up her hands. We are the only hope for this kind Georgian family.
– Inga, how did you find yourself in this situation?
Inga: When you are young, you take everything easy. When Badri and I got married, we thought that we would both will work to keep our family, build a house that would be full of love and warmth, and the sonorous laughter of children would never stop … We always wanted to have many children. As you can see, this dream has come true, but everything else… Badri is a hard worker, he takes any job. He has never been lazy, and he always managed to keep the family. But a few years ago, he got his arm injured and after that, he became unable to work the way he used before.
– What is your income now?
Inga: Our only income is the social allowance. Along with food coupons it’s 640 GEL per month. We try to stretch this money for the whole month – and we buy only basic things. Buying new clothes is out of question; and winter is a real trouble. We need to buy firewood, but still, it is almost impossible to heat this house. Well, you can see that this is not even a house, just walls with roof. Children snuggle up to each other when they sleep to get warm somehow…
– Inga, how did you find yourself here?
Inga: We don’t have our own housing. When my husband was able to work, we somehow managed to pay the rent, and when we became unable to pay, we arbitrarily occupied this dilapidated building. Later we learned that it had been built as a bar… But we are thankful even for that. It is still better than sleeping in the street.
– What the allowance is enough for? What’s your children’s everyday diet?
Inga: Cereals and pasta, that’s it… The children need meat and dairy products too – but it is an unaffordable luxury for us… In order not to spend money on bread, we buy a bag of flour, which is enough for two weeks. I bake bread for children, sometimes I even make potato patties for them. They gifted us meat recently and little Lazare is so happy! He comes to the refrigerator several times a day and just admires!
– Does anybody help you? Your parents or relatives?
Inga: We have absolutely no one to help us… Everyone has their own problems. I can’t make anyone take care of my children. They might say: “If you were unable to take care of them why did you gave birth to them?” You know, people sometimes are angry.
– Inga, what do you believe in? In what do you see the salvation?
Inga: Only in good people. How to help someone if you don’t know about his troubles? That’s why I addressed your Fund. They say you have many good friends and you help everyone.
– Tell me about your children please. Do they go to school and kindergarten? Who is the most talented of them?
Inga: The elder children all go to school, and only little Lazare stays at home. Now when everyone is transferred to a distance learning it became very difficult for us. We have neither computers, nor tablets, nor smartphones for the children to attend classes. And they are very talented. I say this not because they are my children – it just hurts me that they have no opportunity to learn. My elder son Rezy draws very well, he even took drawing classes, but then he had to quit – we became unable to buy paints and brushes. And he told me like an adult: “I will take the drawing classes when I will earn money by myself.” But he was so good at drawing!
Lizi, Keti, and Luka are also very good students, they know that only knowledge will help them to achieve something in this life.
– Can I talk to your children, please? Rezy, you are the oldest. What are you dreaming about?
Rezy (15-year-old): Most of all I want to draw! I dream of becoming an icon painter! I hope I will succeed in that.
Luka (12-year-old): To be honest, I don’t know who I want to become yet. I can’t paint as good as Rezy can. And I am not good at Math. But I hope I will also manage to become someone!
– Lizi, have you already decided what do you want to become?
Lizi (14-year-old): Not yet. But I am sure it will be related to the literature – I love reading. Sometimes I imagine that I am together with the main characters of the book, and it’s exciting!
Keti (10-year-old): And I want all the children in Georgia to have their dreams come true.
– Lazare, now it’s your turn. Your sisters do not talk much. Do they offend you – you are the youngest?
Lazare (5-year-old): The girls are good. They read the fairy tales to me. And the boys… (he looked at them), they offend me. They don’t want to play with me.
– Lazare, what do you like? Tell me about your dreams. Maybe they will come true?
Lazare: I love mashed potatoes! It tastes like meat! And I love meat! Let me show you! We have some. And I also want a bike! I want it more than meat!
– You are just wonderful children! Thank you, Inga, that you raised them like that! What are you dreaming about?
Inga: I only dream about my children being warm and full! So that they have clothes … They do not deserve this poverty! My heart hurts when I see how malnourished they are, how they look for anything to wrap themselves in so as not to freeze…
– What do you need most right now?
Inga: Foodstuffs… I want my children to eat their fill. I dream about a washing machine. We need fridge as well, the old one is good for nothing… Look around – we have nothing at all! Everything falls apart – beds, chairs, and the house itself… We will be grateful for any help. Any! The elder children are embarrassed of their situation. We will not manage to cope without the help. And I know it is not a sin to ask for help.
