Needles keep piercing her heart all day long. The first one starts to prick when she has nothing to put on to school. Mom washed her only blouse, and now she has to cover the darned holes in her jacket with hand.
The second needle starts to prick on her way to school. The school is far away, and it is very difficult for her to walk. She has heart problems since childhood. The next needles appear when she cannot buy a bun at school. Everyone eats, but she does not. She says she is not hungry. And her heart starts hurting even more: either because of lying, or from hunger. And so it goes on every day… By the end of the day, there are hundreds of needles in her heart, and they sting a lot. Sometimes they prick her so hard that tears start coming from her eyes…

“Kitty is my medicine, I will hug her, and it makes me feel better”
After reading the story of the Pikriya Kotia family, you will also feel needles in your heart. Maybe not a hundred, but a million.
One year ago, when they became unable to pay for rent and it was unbearable to live without a roof over their head, they found a trailer on the outskirts of the city. Someone offered them nobly: “Live here until I need it.” 5-year-old Barbara, 11-year-old Mariam, their mother Pikria and their grandmother Eteri, who is very sick, live in the trailer.
It’s needless to say, that there are no amenities in the trailer, that the roof is leaking, that it is like a stove in summer, and like a freezer in winter. It is clear enough. Probably a tin is cooler and more comfortable.
The trailer fits only fold-out couch for the grandmother and one bed for the rest of the family.
The stove, which smokes and can poison the entire family one day, is salvation for them. They cook on it, heat water for washing and bathing. One can stand it in winter. But can you imagine how it is in the summer when it’s hot?
And here are the people who live in this trailer: two beautiful girls, their mother and grandmother. Their mental and physical condition is no better than the trailer where they live. Let’s start with their physical condition…
Mariam has a congenital heart defect. She needs less stringent conditions – it is dangerous for her to overwork or worry. She also needs normal food and a calm environment. As you understand, the girl has none of this and cannot have it. The only thing the state does for her is that it finances a full examination and treatment once a year. Thanks for that.
Little Barbara has ovarian problems. She had been already operated on twice and she might need another operation later. She needs medications and ointments daily, but there is no money to buy them. So, she has it sometimes.
And the grandmother had a heart attack. Her heart could not stand it. It is not made of stone. She collapsed and broke her hip. Now she can only move with the help of crutches and a wheelchair. She cries, she is sorry for her daughter. She gave her birth not for such torment, she dreamed about a completely different life for her. Pikria has no right to get sick. She just doesn’t pay attention to the pain. She tells herself that this is all from the nerves, persuades herself that there is no problem. She’s just not supposed to get sick.
“Come on, Mommy, one more step, one more. You taught me how to walk, and now we will teach you “
Pikria: I do not know where to start telling you about the problems of my family. If all of us would be healthy, maybe, it would be easier to live in this trailer, and the allowance would be enough for everything… But when something hurts everyone, and I can’t help, I want to die. But will it make anyone’s life easier?
– Pikria, I see you can’t work. What do you live on?
Pikria: 380 GEL of allowance and 150 GEL of my mother’s pension. We are lucky that we don’t have to pay rent. But still this money is not enough for both food and medications. I no longer have idea what to cook with.
– Do you go to the social canteen?
Pikria: I would like to, even though they say that the food there is good for nothing. We are on a waiting list. Do you know what does it mean? If someone gets removed from the main list, maybe someone on the waiting list will be lucky. It means that I have to wait for someone else to die. God forbid! I know it sounds terrible, but it is true.
An empty refrigerator looks so sad.
– What is the allowance enough for?
Pikria: For not starving to death. And the else is only the will of God. Everything you see here are gifts from kind people. Furniture, clothes, appliances… If you ask us what we dream about, I won’t be able answer you. Do you understand? You know? And my children won’t be able to either.
“All dreams get crashed on this iron trailer”
Mariam (11-year-old): I will be able! I dream and know what I want! I want to become a doctor. Heart doctor!
– A cardiologist?
Mariam: Yes, I forgot what they are called. Now everyone’s heart hurts, and I will treat everyone. Mine hurts as well, and I will heal myself.
– Why do you think everyone’s heart hurts?
Mariam: Because everyone is nervous. And I’m not nervous, I just have needles in my heart, and they prick. If I become a doctor, I will take them out.
– What would you like to have right now in the meantime, until you become a doctor?
Mariam: School clothes and a bag. And also, pencils, watercolors and brushes. And a sketchbook! I would paint your portrait and give it to you. But I have nothing now.
Barbare (5-year-old): And I want to have a Barbie doll and a “hebuska”. Like this one – delicious and hot.
“The most delicious hebuska is when it is warm.”
– You see, the girls were able to say what they want. Pikria, you can also help our readers to do good. I’m sure they’ll want to help you!
Pikria: I don’t ask for money for treatment, the state finances it. But I really need foodstuffs, clothes for children, a small wardrobe or chest of drawers. Children need tablets to study. We also need bedding very much. And one more thing, I don’t know if I can ask for that. Our roof leaks, and it would be great if someone helped us with building materials to fix it. The rest is up to the kind people. You know, I don’t even know what else to dream of…
Be magicians, give them a piece of your heart!
