I’m coming from Karaleti, and tears are flowing down my face! This is a first for me! We’ve witnessed plenty of sorrows every day since the Fund began its work… but this is on a whole different level… I can’t forget the fear of possible death I saw in the eyes of young Guram, who has been battling blood cancer since the age of 13! It is also called leukemia – “white blood”!

“Why should my life depend on money?” – asked the handsome Georgian guy Guram from the doorway of the house, and his question seemed to pierce my soul like a sharp knife.
I nearly cried in front of him! I already knew his story. But what to say in response – I still don’t know…
Extend a helping hand to Guram, good man! Otherwise, the gaze of a 16-year-old Georgian boy, who has endured more pain than most adults in their entire life, will haunt you.”

“My life depends on money. It’s a great injustice!”

Look into the sad eyes of this child. His life depends on us.

Leukemia is a deadly disease, and it is not treated in Georgia. Treatment for leukemia is very painful – this involves constant blood transfusions and chemotherapy.

Guram was 13 years old when he found out he had acute leukemia. For three years, the child suffered from terrible pain during transfusions and chemotherapy. And then, weakened, with falling out clumps of hair, he lay and wondered: why did such a tragedy happen to him? But he did not lose hope.  As he endured the pain and suffering, time seemed to drag on, and his hope that his life wasn’t ending, but rather just beginning, slowly faded. And today, in the child’s eyes, the last spark of this hope is fading!

And also, throughout the entire trip, as well as after it, in the evening and at night, my conscience does not stop torturing me, because I could not answer the boy’s main question: why does his life depend on money?

“Save Guram, good people! He has suffered so much! He must live! And the doctors have finally promised him life!”

Friends, we will have to answer Guram’s main question about whether his life depends only on money! And prove him that his life in Georgia among his compatriots depends only on our kindness and faith in God! Let’s prove it to him!

God has put in our hands the most important decision in our lives! And this is a great privilege for those who fervently believe, hope and love!

I am writing this article, and a thousand words are running through my head at the same time. The first thing that came to my mind was the poem of the great Georgian poet Galaktion Tabidze “Karaleti Days”. When I first read this poem about Karaleti, how could I imagine that one day I myself would have to return from Karaleti to Tbilisi with a heavy heart. Yes, I am coming from Karaleti, and the frightened eyes of the child haunt me.  I came from Karaleti with a sense of guilt, because I left the main question of that sad boy unanswered: “Why do children’s lives depend on money?”

And now, dear reader, I have only to tell Guram’s sad story. He was 13 years old when he learned that he had acute leukemia. For three years the child spent day and night in the white walls of the hospital, During blood transfusions and chemo he suffered from terrible pains. Guram, exhausted and with his hair falling out, still did not lose hope. And today the last spark of this hope is fading away in the child’s eyes.

Guram (16 years old): Auntie, will you return to Tbilisi today? You must be so happy! I don’t even have money to go to Tbilisi and go to the clinic. The leukemia is worsening, I need urgent treatment, but my parents have no money for treatment. My father is disabled, he can’t work. My mom can’t leave me alone and can’t work either. My grandparents were denied of social allowance. My life depends on money. This is a great injustice! We are taught a lot of things at school. Even outside of school I have read many books, but in none of them have I found an answer to the most important question: Why do children’s lives depend on money? Maybe you can still answer me, aunt (addressing the correspondent). Why are you silent? You don’t have an answer to this question either?

During chemotherapy, my hair fell out completely. When I looked in the mirror for the first time, I felt fear. Fear of death. Since then, that horrible feeling has haunted me everywhere, like a ghost.

My peers dream, but I can’t even dream. What am I supposed to dream about? I don’t even know if I’ll wake up in the morning or be found dead in bed. My parents have no children but me.
If I die, who will take care of them?

God, how many times I’ve come to Your house, to Your Church. I thought You would hear me there. Lord, when You created the world, why did You invent money? I have to die because of this goddamn money. I don’t want to die. I want to live.

Luiza (Guram’s grandmother): For three years I watched a child weakened by chemo in a hospital room. I watched the child suffer and I couldn’t help. I wouldn’t wish such a bitter old age on my enemy. We finished the chemo and now we have no possibility to take the child to the clinic. However, if he doesn’t get treatment after chemotherapy, it’s a waste of so much suffering! I’d give my life if I could. God, kill me!!!

No grandmother should have to watch her grandson die a slow and agonizing death. And why is he dying? Because of lack of money! Where is justice in this country? Maybe someone will stab me in the heart to end my agonizing old age forever. My husband and I have been denied of social allowance. Maybe with just these pennies we could raise money for the child’s treatment.

In the house during the rain water flows in the same way as outside, the walls are cracked, the house is collapsing on our heads, and we have been denied of social benefits. Do the elderly in Georgia deserve such an old age? I can’t buy flour to bake bread in a tone (Georgian bread oven). But it’s not me I’m worried about. To take my leukemia-stricken grandson to Tbilisi, I could really use the social allowance for travel expenses. I never got an answer why we were deprived of it.

Dear (addressing the correspondent), you will come back to Tbilisi, won’t you? I beg you to make everyone know about my grandson. Please, let everyone know that the child is dying because of poverty. I rely on good people. Only they can save my grandson.

“If I could, I would give my life to save my grandson.”

“No elderly person should have to suffer like me. Save my grandson, I beg you!”

Good people, I have fulfilled the promise I made to the desperate old woman and brought you the story of her grandson. Now it’s time to act. Unfortunately, every minute lost is bad for Guram’s health. God forbid, death will take this sunny boy away from us. Can Georgia afford to lose its sons? With your help we have won the battle against death many times. And now there’s another war ahead! Let’s unite! And I believe we will defeat the insidious death in this war!

Don’t forget to share this post to let your friends know about Guram’s Mountain. It’s extremely important!
