I was six years old when I first went outside with crutches. I so wanted to play with the other kids! And then, so disappointingly, I fell into a muddy puddle. Covered in mud and with terrible pain in my leg, I first asked, then begged the kids to help me get up. You should have seen how they laughed! And then, with some kind of joy I couldn’t understand, they watched me roll helplessly in the mud…!

“If you could have seen how all my former friends were laughing! And no one offered a helping hand! And all the while I was screaming in terrible pain! My legs were twisted even more! Are all people this mean except my mother?!” 11-year-old Nikoloz asked me naively but seriously.

“They all laughed, and then they left, leaving me like a stray dog! The pain that engulfed my knee and leg was unbearable, but for some reason I only remember the pain in my chest. That’s probably where my heart is. (The child showed a place in the chest closer to the left arm.) I forgot everything in the world. It was as if a blunt knife had stabbed my soul—it hurt so much. All that remained was resentment. It was as if I had been poisoned by the venom of cruelty.”

Nikoloz (11 years old): “Auntie, don’t leave me in poverty, have pity on Mom and Dad too! I know for a fact that they often cry bitterly at night, and then they console each other!”
