Giorgi’s body is paralyzed – but not his will to live. And not his eyes, which silently plead: “Don’t leave me…” His mother has done everything she possibly could. Now, she and her son need our support. A palliative care ward is not a sentence. Indifference – that’s the real sentence.

REPOST RIGHT AWAY, MY GOOD MAN! HELP YOUR FRIENDS FIND THE WAY TO GOD!

A 55-year-old man, after a massive stroke, has ended up in a palliative care ward. If you’re not sure what that means, you’ll find an explanation at the end of this post. But first, read Giorgi’s story – because right now, more than ever, he needs our help.

Giorgi cannot move on his own – his right side is paralyzed. He cannot speak. He cannot stand. It may seem like the end. But it’s not!

After months in a coma, Giorgi is still alive. He is conscious, reacts to voices, recognizes his mother, and looks people in the eye. Most importantly – he signals that he wants to live.

When I came to the hospital to film a video, Giorgi did something most patients in his condition can’t – he made it clear he wanted to look presentable. Not in a hospital gown. Not as a victim – but as a man.

His 75-year-old mother, Elena, brought him clothes, brushed his hair, and gently helped him sit up. When I entered the palliative care ward, he was already prepared – no hospital robe, neatly groomed. His mother, an elderly woman with tired eyes, quietly said: “He wants to look normal.  Like a person, not a patient.”

That’s how Giorgi looked like

In December 2024, Giorgi suffered a double stroke – hemorrhagic and ischemic – complicated by an aneurysm. He underwent a craniotomy. He spent nine days in a coma.

Today Giorgi is alive, but completely dependent on his mother. His right side does not function, and he cannot speak. It’s a severe, but not hopeless, condition. With proper and consistent rehabilitation, patients like Giorgi can partially regain speech, mobility, and even independence. He has already started sitting in a wheelchair. He recognizes his mother and makes eye contact.

Right now, the most important thing for Giorgi is long-term, comprehensive rehabilitation. This is not just massage. It’s a full program to restore neural connections, ease paralysis, and bring back mobility:

  • intensive physiotherapy (including neurorehabilitation),
  • regular professional massages,
  • medical treatment (including stroke prevention).

Elena: “I’m not asking for anything for myself – just help him. I’ve held on for so many years, but now I can’t manage alone.”

She no longer has the money to buy Giorgi diapers, food, or hygiene products. She can’t afford to continue paying for physiotherapy or the palliative care ward.

The state covers 70% of Giorgi’s palliative care costs. Each month, Elena needs to add just 600 GEL – but now even that amount is beyond her reach. She can no longer afford the expenses.  The mother needs help to continue the rehabilitation of her only son.

Honestly, 600 lari is an amount we can easily spend on two dinners out.  For Giorgi, though, it’s his only chance of recovery.

Giorgi’s mother – Elena Lortkipanidze – has walked this path alone. She lost her husband in 1984 and her younger son in 1995 (after a tragic fight that caused internal bleeding).
Only Giorgi remained.  She is his guardian, nurse, voice, and will to live.

Now, at 75, Elena is frail and unwell. She suffers from high blood pressure, joint and muscle pain. She doesn’t see doctors – not because she’s healthy, but because she has no time.

The family’s income – around 400 GEL in pensions and small social allowance – barely covers survival.

Today, Elena can no longer cope alone. She has done everything she could – fought for her son’s health for decades, taken him to different cities for treatment, cared for him without a single break. She sold everything she owned.

Elene: “I have no more resources, no way to pay for my son’s palliative care stay. I can’t afford rehabilitation, massages, medicine, or nursing care… All I have left is love. But sadly, love alone is no longer enough to bring my son back to life.”

Elena is asking for help, support, and hope. Giorgi’s rehabilitation depends on us – on our willingness to help. Any amount matters – it can mean a massage, a day with a caregiver, a chance.

What is a palliative care ward?

It is a specialized medical unit that helps people with severe, often incurable conditions.

The main goal is not to cure, but to relieve suffering, provide comfort, care, and support.

In Georgia, palliative care is underdeveloped.

Who needs it?

  • Patients after severe strokes,
  • People with advanced cancer,
  • Those with chronic, progressive illnesses (dementia, ALS, heart/lung failure),
  • Those unable to eat, move, or speak on their own,
  • Those requiring constant care and monitoring.

What does palliative care include?

  • Pain and symptom management,
  • Medication support,
  • Hygiene care (washing, diaper changes, feeding),
  • Psychological support for patient and family,
  • Help preparing for the final stage of life.

Palliative care in Georgia:

  • Palliative care officially exists, but is not accessible to everyone,
  • Beds are limited,
  • The state covers only about 70% of costs,
  • Families often pay for the rest themselves,
  • Home care is an option – but almost always falls entirely on relatives.

Why it matters:

A palliative care ward is not a place of death – it’s a place where pain is eased, dignity is preserved, and sometimes, recovery is possible. If someone you love is in such a condition, outside help and attention can change everything.

If you are willing to visit the family and help them in person, here is their address: Tbilisi, 13 Immanuil Apkhazi Str (room in a private house).

Every time you can help someone, just do it, and rejoice that God answers someone’s prayers through you!
