Look at her – she is a real princess. But a terrible illness has turned this angel’s life into a nightmare. Acute epileptic seizure syndrome – this diagnosis robbed eight-year-old Nita of her childhood, and even that was not enough. This insidious disease is now trying to take away the girl’s future as well.

This single image is enough to understand how much the child is suffering.

Loss of consciousness, seizures, deteriorating vision and hearing, unbearable pain – this is far from a complete list of what this little angel has to endure.

Look how beautiful she is. Her eyes shine brighter than the stars.

When Nita is not in pain, she seems to be on cloud nine.

And this is Nita’s younger sister – six-year-old Gabriela. Who could count how many times Nita has lost consciousness right before her eyes? Since then, every morning for this little angel begins with a terrifying fear: “Is my sister still alive?”

When I was walking to Nita’s home, I suddenly noticed a child sitting on the steps. Her sadness was visible even from the other side of the street. I didn’t know then that she was Nita’s sister.

I came closer, spoke to her, and asked what was troubling her. Her answers were so sincere, and there was such purity in her eyes, that tears welled up in mine.

Gabriela, 6-year-old: “Auntie, sometimes my sister suddenly closes her eyes and falls to the ground. At those moments, I get so scared that it feels like she has died. Mom doesn’t tell me exactly what’s wrong with Nita. I understand why – she thinks I’m still little. But I understand everything, Auntie. I’m already a big girl. I notice when Mom cries quietly.”

Gabriela’s maturity struck me. But her kindness struck me even more:

she gave her favorite sandwich to a stray dog, even though she was very hungry.
