“Auntie, don’t leave us in poverty…” We have absolutely nothing to eat, my mom and dad are seriously ill—these are the words of four-year-old Gio, who, like a true Georgian, is ready to share his last piece of bread. But he himself has nothing to eat on these holidays… My God, does no one in Georgia need this child?!

Gio (4 years old): “Auntie, we have no food at home except bread and sauerkraut. My tummy hurts from hunger. And yours too? Help yourself, Auntie! I don’t mind!” 

Look into those huge, kind eyes. Before you is a little angel who, even when hungry, knows how to share. Gio gives his meager food to a homeless kitten who comes to their home. 

Gio (4 years old): “Santa Claus promised to bring me presents for New Year’s, but he didn’t. No food, no candy, no toys, nothing.” 

Gio (4 years old): “I don’t have any winter shoes. Just these rubber slippers. How can I go to kindergarten dressed like this? And I have friends waiting for me there.” 

Gio is a real helper, he collects firewood to light the stove in the cold and dark room. 

With his little hands, he stacks firewood into a toy trailer and hauls it home like a grown-up. 

You won’t be able to hold back your tears when you see where this child lives. 

The windows are covered in cellophane instead of glass. The floors in the house are rotten, and the wind blows in from every corner.  

George (39, Gio’s father): “I was a year and a half old when my father died. My mother left me with my grandmother, but she died when I was 10. After that, I grew up in an orphanage. My childhood was difficult, and I don’t want my son to go through the same. We don’t have our own home. We’re tired of wandering from one rented apartment to another. My dream is a small plot of land where I can build a house for my family…” 

The family lives on social benefits — 400 lari per month. Almost half of this money goes toward rent. Every Georgian knows: it’s impossible to raise a small child on that amount, let alone buy groceries. 

You probably think poverty is this family’s biggest problem. If only it were… 

Gio’s parents are seriously ill. 

His mother has serious heart problems. 

His father has a stomach ulcer. 

Because of their illnesses, they can’t work. They don’t even have money for medication. 

And there’s no one to help them… except us. 

Gio’s mother washes clothes outside, in a basin under the tap.

She doesn’t have a washing machine. The woman, who has a heart condition, has to stop and rest frequently — the physical labor leaves her short of breath. The family needs the most basic things: food, firewood, a refrigerator, a washing machine, and a TV so the child can watch cartoons. 

Gio (4 years old): “Auntie, don’t leave us in poverty. Have pity on Mom and Dad too! They often cry bitterly at night!” 

God-fearing people! The only hope for this forgotten family is you! The parents of little four-year-old Gio can still be helped; they can be cured. We must act quickly! Today, Gio is the son of each of us. Let’s work together to give him the childhood that poverty stole from him.
