I, a journalist for the Chernovetskyi Fund, was given permission to see Koba in the hospital for only a few minutes. With his eyes, the dying man let me know that he wanted to say something on camera.

At last, with tremendous effort, he managed to whisper:

“I don’t want to leave this world without saying these words to my grandmother, Kakilo: ‘Grandma, you probably think I’ve forgotten how you used to carry me on your back while you worked the fields. My dear, beloved Grandma, if you never see me alive again, please know this:
There has never been anyone in this world whom I have loved more than you.'”

Grandma Kakilo watched with her own eyes as an ambulance crew carried her unconscious grandson out of their home on a stretcher.

Since that day, her tears have never dried.

Kakilo Ananidze is the very woman who, back in the 1950s, taught the villagers to read and write while she herself was still a young woman.

It was thanks to this remarkable woman that children who had never learned to read or write received an education and, with her encouragement, went on to do countless good things for their country.

The contribution she made to her homeland and to generations of people is beyond measure.

Yet the greatest tragedy is this: Her own country has forgotten Grandma Kakilo.

This 102-year-old woman asks for nothing for herself.

She has only one final wish to see her beloved grandson walk back through these gates once again.
