“You know how bad it is when hunger grips your stomach! We’re always hungry, and we live very poorly. And Mom doesn’t have the money to buy us even one candy to share. We only buy bread. Bread for lunch, bread before bed…soon we’ll start looking like loaves ourselves,” little Andria giggles, not realizing there’s nothing funny about his words. And he wonders why Mom starts crying at such a funny joke…but what else can a desperate mother do when she can’t feed her children? When they ask God to turn a piece of bread into something tasty? “You can do that, right?” Andria looks naively at the sky and shows his bread to God. “Turn my bread into meat!”

Little Shota grabs everything edible and puts it in his mouth
Tamara: I don’t remember the last time my children ate normal food. I can’t even buy food on credit in the stores. I owe a large amount of money everywhere. What else to do when your children are hungry? I don’t know. Right now, is the hardest time of my life. Shota is only one year old, and I can’t leave him with anyone to go to work. My husband has health problems. That’s how we live. If you can call it living.
Children sleep near that wall, from which pieces are falling off
– Your living conditions are just terrible. Is it your house?
Tamara: No, we moved in here illegally 8 years ago. Before that, we lived in an apartment, I can’t say that the conditions there were better, but it was ours. We took out a mortgage, but we couldn’t pay it off and lost our apartment. We can’t afford to pay rent, so we had to move into this building. It used to be a dormitory. We can’t even save up a small amount of money to at least paint the walls. We live in this mold. I only ask God that my children don’t get sick. Even if one of them catches a cold, I won’t be able to buy medications. One can say that my children are growing up under God’s protection!
” I don’t know what this is… but it’s definitely not bread”
– Are you a religious person?
Tamara: Oh! If it weren’t for my faith, I would have given up a long time ago. You know, it’s often the case that when you’re at your lowest, with no strength left and no one to turn to for help, and there’s no food at home, someone always seems to show up and helps you get through another day. And now you’ve come! It’s not just a coincidence, right? Maybe hundreds of people address you, but you came to us. In the most difficult moment.
“I’m afraid to live in this house. Even the walls are scary”
Kaha (8 years old): We only talk about food and ask God for it. But not just bread. Once I tried one thing – I don’t know what it’s called – you spread it on bread, some delicious paste. It’s brown and tastes like the most delicious food in the world. So sweet! I want all my food to turn into this delicious thing!
Andria (6-year-old): And I want a bicycle! And cartoons! And a ball. And a beautiful house!
Kakha: I also want a beautiful house. I’m afraid even to walk by this wall. It seems like it’s looking at me and scaring me.
“I just want my children to live, not just exist”
– And what do you want, Tamara?
Tamara: I only want one thing! To have the opportunity to create a cozy home for my children in these ruins. I dream only of the most basic things. I wish they wouldn’t throw us out of here like street kittens, and that my kids wouldn’t breathe mold. I can’t manage to get the place clean. I sweep, but then there’s dust, dirt… the walls are crumbling, the ceiling is leaking, everything is rotten. We don’t even have a table or chairs. The beds are falling apart. We don’t even have gas. We have to light a wood stove to boil a kettle. There’s no one to ask for help. Everyone has their own concerns, their own problems. Who cares about other people’s children’s problems?
“I want this bread to turn into candy”
– Do you need clothes or special food for the little ones?
Tamara: Saba is two, and Shota is one year old. Are you joking about special food? Sometimes I pour water on bread to make porridge. Sometimes there’s not even sugar to make tea for the children. Our neighbor gave Saba a tomato, and he won’t let it out of his hands. He bites it, hugs it… my heart is about to break looking at that.
This food should be enough for the children for the whole day
– What do you live on?
Tamara: On social allowance. It’s enough for two weeks. I buy the cheapest grains and vegetables. I can rarely afford butter and sugar. We’ve never bought clothes or shoes. And toys… the kids don’t know how to play with toys. They’ve never had any.
Shota got tired of crying from hunger and fell asleep

Here is another story about a Georgian family. We are not telling you anything new. Thousands of families suffer throughout Georgia! And we want to get them all out of this hopeless darkness, out of the quagmire they ended up in through no fault of their own. Poverty knocked on the door of the Pirveli family. The father of the children is unable to work. He really wants to, but he can’t! He just cries, and it makes him feel even worse! And mother Tamara cannot leave the children and go to work. That’s how they survive on pennies.
You are their only hope! We should save the children! Look how good they are! Beds, building materials, a table, chairs, groceries, and a refrigerator – that’s what they are asking for. We need to provide clothes and toys for the children and bring sweets for them – because without all of this, they will grow up to be angry adults. Children must have toys!
We really hope for your help and know that Georgians never leave their people in trouble!
If you are willing to visit this family and help them in person, here is their address: Tbilisi, TEMKA 11th micro district, 1st quarter (hostel for refugees)
