I beg you! I don’t want to die of hunger and cold! Take care of me before a torturous death does its vile deed! “Will you help me? Will you bring me some food? I am so hungry! Won’t I freeze this winter? But maybe I won’t live until winter? I am very ill! What if something happens to me somewhere? Or if the dogs bite me? Or if I fall with my sick leg and breathe my last breath after so much suffering? Who will find me? Probably only crows will touch my lifeless body.” – Grandma Nana looks at us with fear and sobs like a child. Cunning epilepsy and brain diseases have forever kept her in a childlike state… If you only knew how tough it is for her and in what dreadful conditions this poor, sick child has to live. She needs our help the most right now.

REPOST RIGHT AWAY, MY GOOD MAN! HELP YOUR FRIENDS TO GET CLOSER TO THE WORK OF MERCY!

I beg you! I don’t want to die of hunger and cold

What medicine should she take after meal?  She has not eaten at all today!

Neglected and abandoned by everyone, 62-year-old Nana Tsutskiridze has suffered from epilepsy since childhood.  As she grew older, many other diseases appeared, such as cerebral circulatory disorders, right-sided paresis, and difficulty in moving around. And her seizures became more frequent. She used to cope, taking medications that she was entitled to free of charge – she had never been able to buy anything! In addition to all this, Grandmother Nana has high blood pressure. And her leg hurts a lot. It is difficult for her to walk.  Her memory has deteriorated.  Sometimes she can’t find her walking stick to at least go to this canteen “for the poor” (as she calls it), where they give her half a loaf of bread and a small jar of watery soup.

What kind of life is it when you are sick, when you have an incurable disease, when you are hungry, cold and so lonely that from the walls, instead of portraits, only the shadow of death stares at you with wide-open eyes? Do you have no answer? Then open your hearts, read to the end the story of Grandmother Nana and perhaps you will manage to save the unfortunate person at least from hunger and cold!

Nana (62-year-old): I get dizzy all the time, dear. And hunger? It makes me even more dizzy. All I had today was tea. I’m so sick. My leg hurts so much that this morning, it was hard for me to stand even with a stick.  It’s dangerous for me to walk. Do you know how many times I’ve collapsed? Once, when I was walking along this path, a dog attacked me. It bit my hand so hard that it ripped out the flesh… Oh, how painful it was… But I am not angry with that dog, it was as lonely and hungry as I was… It would be good to have so much food to feed all living beings.  And I don’t even have anything for myself… So, I gave to the dog – just as miserable as I am – only my flesh – and it’s sick too…

“The dogs that run her are as hungry and lonely, as me.  How long this path to the social canteen seems when my leg hurts so much”

 – Have you been vaccinated?

Nana: Probably yes. I ended up in the hospital in such a terrible condition that I don’t remember anything.  I ended up in the hospital many times, mostly because of seizures. And I don’t remember either what happened then.

 – You have been living alone, like this, for a long time?

Nana: Since 2002… I think… Well, yes… Then my father died. When he was dying, he spoke only about me, saying that in the next world he would not have peace because of me.  He took care of me. My mom died earlier. I’m such a miserable person!

“I’m looking outside to see if someone will come and bring me something to eat!”

 – Don’t you have any relatives? Brothers, sisters?

Nana: We were five brothers and sisters, but after the death of my father, I did not see any of them. Who will visit me, who needs me? Only little Giorgi remembers me …

 – And who is little Giorgi? What’s your relationship to him?

Nana: He’s not even my relative, but I love him very much. He is a special child. He is the son of my friend Nino, he is only 13 years old, but he is already capable of great and good deeds. He brings me food when they have it themselves. Life is not easy for his family either… They live in a neighboring village – in Chikha. Even he does not always manage to come from there. His mother, Nino, gives me clothes. If not for her, there would be nothing to wear, I would have become even more like a stray dog. (Pauses. She takes her hands to her head and tightens the bandage more tightly. It hurts a lot…

 – Have you had constant pain? When was the last time you had an examination?

Nana: What examinations?  What doctors? Sweetie, they’ll prescribe me a lot of medications, and some of them cost more than my entire monthly pension. And as you can see, I don’t even have enough money for bread. If they send me to Tbilisi for some procedures? How am I supposed to get there?

 – Is it your house? To whom does it belong?

Nana: To my brother, and I don’t even know where he is. His child was sick and many years ago he moved abroad for his child’s treatment. I don’t know anything else about them. In 1991, this house was badly damaged by an earthquake. (Refers to the devastating earthquake that occurred in the Racha-Imereti region in 1991. Its impact on the earth’s surface was determined by the force of 8-9 degrees. The earthquake damaged 46,000 buildings. It completely swallowed up the village of Khakheti. The number of victims was 114-270 people) Look, the house is big, but very old, all the walls are cracked. The wind blows from every crack. The sounds are terrible… My ears hurt. Then I get a bad headache… I have to huddle in this little room. I have a very old heater “Karma”, but it works or not… I can’t turn it on in winter – I get big bills, then they turn off the gas and then I have to stay in the cold for months.

The walls are so cracked that the wind walks through the house as an unwelcome guest. I wish it wasn’t the wind that came to her, but people…..

 – How do you live, what is your income?

Nana: My income is my pension and social allowance. It is not enough even to pay bills and buy medications. I recently had two epileptic seizures right outside – when I ran out of medication. I collapsed and started wheezing. I was lying on the ground with my face blue and my arms twisted when passers-by noticed me. I was foaming at the mouth. I scared everyone. Some people thought I was dead. If strangers hadn’t helped me every time, I’d have died a long time ago. But people won’t always be around, will they? That’s what I’m afraid of!

 – Nana, do you remember anything from the past that makes you feel good?

Nana: Until I was 18, the illness didn’t kill me like it does now.  Outwardly, you couldn’t notice that I was a sick girl. I could say I was quite pretty. I worked in a publishing house together with my mom. We used to live in Kutaisi then. Many boys liked me. I liked one too. But as soon as these guys found out what was wrong with me, they ran away from me as if I carried the plague. Once, a guy I liked even brought me flowers – a big, beautiful bouquet. Sometimes I think it was a dream. But it was not! I still feel the smell of these flowers.

I beg you! I don’t want to die of hunger and cold

 – Do you pray to God?

Nana: Little Giorgi gave me a cross, I always have it with me. I put it in front of me and cry, pouring out my heart to God. Who else should I talk to? I trust only Him. He is the only one who always comes to this house. And he brought you to me, to save me! Did not he?

 – We will tell the entire Georgia about your pain and our good friends will certainly support you!

Nana: I want people to help me! I don’t want to die from hunger and cold. I don’t want to die so that no one would know about it. I don’t want to die! Your words make me happy and bring me hope. Now I will wait for here by the window… (She sat by a window with cellophane instead of glass and put her head down on the sill like a little child.)

 – What kind of help would you like to get from people?

Nana: Food. I often starve. I get medicines from the state, I buy something with my pension, but when I feel sick – that is not enough… I also want to be warm in winter. So that I could use the gas heater. If God would send someone to help fix these windows, how nice it would be… Only two windows in my room, I don’t think about the rest of them… I won’t bother anyone for something I don’t really need! Loneliness kills me – if I only had a TV – I would at least talk to it. I would be happy to have a small fridge. I would store food in it, when I have it and it would last for longer. If you only knew how hard is to live like that! But I still don’t want to die! Dear people, let me live for two or three years more!

In the winter, a terrible cold comes in from the windows and cracks in the walls

This heater is life-threatening – it’s very old. Well, nobody needs it now. Nana can’t afford to pay the gas bill, since gas costs a lot of money?

She looked at us like a big child and asked, “Will you visit me again soon?

Grandma Nana’s dire situation broke our hearts. It hurt to see the bitter tears of an old person who had turned into a small helpless child. She took out the tattered photographs of her parents from her small purse and recalled how she had buried her happiness and youth with them. She said she wanted to have children, but no one wanted to tie their fate to such a sick girl. And now no one wants her! She only believes in kindness of strangers. She expects kind people like Nino and Giorgi to open the gates of her house and make her heart happy – even if they just come to visit her, help her just a little, showing her their empathy.

No one knows what awaits us tomorrow. Let’s not push away those in need, let’s not turn a blind eye to the suffering of others. One day we may find ourselves in a similar situation. Do not delay, help this unfortunate woman in any way you can. She will be happy with anything!
