If you’re hungry too, take a bite! Take it, take it! I’ve already had my crusty bite. And if you’re not hungry, pass it on to other hungry babies. It’s so bad when babies’ tummies rumble and ache….

Look, auntie, we only have one little piece of bread left!” – that’s how two-year-old Nikusha greeted me at the doorstep and burst into tears bitterly. The worst part is that this piece still needs to be shared among five people. Nino, mother (30 years old): Can you imagine what a trial it is for a mother to watch her child cry from hunger? I am seriously ill, I have epilepsy. So, when my son and I were discharged from the maternity ward, I couldn’t even breastfeed him. There was no money for baby formula, we did not even have a feeding bottle. My poor son, how hard he cried, he was in agony, I thought he would suffocate! I got scared and called an ambulance. The doctors immediately realized the child was hungry, and the ambulance driver bought the baby a whole crate of formula and a bottle. Thanks to the kindness of strangers, we managed to survive!

In the center of Tbilisi, a family with three young children lives as if in the Stone Age!  Horrible bedbugs, bloodsuckers, poison their lives – sucking the blood of Georgian children!

Look, auntie, we only have one little piece of bread left!” – that’s how two-year-old Nikusha greeted me at the doorstep and burst into tears bitterly. The worst part is that this piece still needs to be shared among five people.

“Mama, I’m hungry! My tummy hurts!”

Our Fund thanks that noble guy!  And we wish him happiness! We really want to know your name, friend! To thank you for this godly deed! Please respond!

I have nothing to feed three children, please help!

– Is there anybody to help you?

Nino: We have three children. We live from social allowance payday to social allowance payday, this month we didn’t make it to the payout, we have no money left for food.  My husband is a loader, he works physically day and night just to buy diapers and bread. But he does not always has work. I’ll be honest with you, he shouldn’t lift heavy things because of his health. But he only thinks about the children not being hungry.

– And how do you buy medications?

Nino: I take 7 pills a day for epilepsy. If I don’t take my epilepsy medicine, I could have a seizure and scare or injure my child!    When I was five months pregnant with my daughter, I had a seizure and collapsed right on the street.  My husband barely revived me.

I must see a doctor, get a brain EEG, it’ll cost at least 150 laris. Or even more!  Where can we get that money?

This determines the course of the disease and its treatment.

– Is the house where you live yours?

Nino: No, we don’t have our own house. This is rented accommodation. Thank God, the landlady is a kind and understanding woman, and she did not charge us rent for several months. Who would throw a family with three children out on the street? Where would we go?

Look, the house is falling apart! We’re afraid the ceiling might collapse on us!

We wash clothes by hand in icy water.

We don’t have a bath; we bathe the children in a basin. We live as if in the Stone Age!

Nino, mother (30 years old): We have another problem – I don’t even know how to say it – bedbug infestation.  These horrible bloodsuckers have infested our mattresses and pillows, they crawl onto the furniture; it’s impossible to be in the house, let alone sleep. The children’s legs and arms are covered in bites! It’s itching terribly, to the point of bleeding!  We urgently need disinfection, but we don’t have money for the special solution. And yet, it only costs 50 laris! All the mattresses need to be thrown out!  We don’t have enough beds; my daughter has to sleep on boards.

Sleep is a real torture when the mattress is swarming with bedbugs.

Look at the legs bitten by bedbugs.

Nino: My mother lives with us; she had a stroke and needs rehabilitation. But instead, she has to work to cover our debts and feed not only us but also the bedbugs, cursed be they!  In my childhood, I saw bedbugs on people only in movies about the Second World War.

I haven’t bought medications in ages. There’s no money left. All I do is give away debts from paycheck to paycheck.

It’s a pity that bedbugs like young blood – my grandson’s. I’d rather be bitten to death! Maybe then the local government would do something for us.

Marina, grandmother (59 years old):  Everything hurts, my dear, my blood pressure is skyrocketing.  I’ve had a stroke, look at how distorted my face is.  I go to work at the laundry shop every day.  No weekends, no rest.  Whether I can or cannot, I have to go. At the end of the day, I almost faint from exhaustion. But what wouldn’t you do for beloved grandchildren, hoping the Lord grants them a better future!

“Auntie, come again!  Will you bring us some food?”

– What help do you need?

Nino: I’m embarrassed to ask!  Because I don’t know anyone from the Fund’s friends! Forgive me, people!

First and foremost, we would be grateful for food. And then – we don’t even have a wardrobe for clothes. Things are scattered in boxes and bags. There’s no refrigerator, no washing machine, no gas stove.  And you can’t do anything in the 21st century without it. My children don’t know what basic amenities are. If kind people helped us arrange a bathroom and at least one room, I would be the happiest mother in the world! The children have no entertainment, they sit at home as if in a dungeon.  We don’t even have a television.   Also, I’m embarrassed to say, but we owe 165 lari for electricity since winter, and if we don’t pay it by tomorrow, they will cut off our power. We’ve already lived without electricity for a month and a half.  Day and night in pitch darkness.  Must we endure this again?
