Reziko cries without ceasing. It’s not even a cry, it’s more of a moan from the pain in his spine. He can’t lie down or sit for long periods. The boy is constantly tense and can’t even straighten his fingers. It’s hard to believe, but Reziko was born perfectly healthy. Due to a medical mistake, he became disabled in an instant. Gulo (mother, 33 years old): Reziko is my first and long-awaited son. He was our joy. He grew up to be a smart boy, but when he was eight months old, he got very sick and his ears hurt a lot… I’m sorry, I can’t tell this story without tears. There’s a lump in my throat.

– What happened to Reziko? Can you tell us more?
Gulo (mother, 33 years old): Reziko is my first and long-awaited son. He was our joy. He grew up to be a smart boy, but when he was eight months old, he got very sick and his ears hurt a lot… I’m sorry, I can’t tell this story without tears. There’s a lump in my throat.
Here are some photos of Reziko as a baby. At eight months old, he was already saying his first words: “mama,” “give.” Now, he can’t say a single word.
Today, his grandmother was lucky: she collected all the cans in the house and dreams of selling them in to buy diapers for Reziko!
Mzevinar (grandmother, 53 years old): Let me tell you the story; my daughter-in-law is crying all the time. We took the child to the hospital, where they mistakenly gave him the wrong injection. I personally heard the doctor admit his mistake. As soon as the ill-fated medicine entered his vein, the baby lost consciousness. Later, we were told he had cerebral palsy and that it was incurable. But we still can’t come to terms with it. The most terrible thing is that the doctors advised my daughter-in-law not to plan for more children, saying the illness was genetic. Fortunately, she didn’t listen to them. After Reziko, my family had two healthy grandsons. How can you trust doctors after that?
Gulo: The life of my son was hanging by a thread. We sold everything we had and now live in social housing. Ten of us are crowded into two rooms. We also had to take out a large bank loan for our child’s treatment. As a result, we are now in a very difficult situation. We don’t even have enough money for food. Reziko loves bananas and yogurt, but I have to feed him bread soaked in water. How much longer can my seriously ill son endure hunger? We have a kind neighbor, an old man, who feels sorry for my son and sometimes buys him fruit. God bless him! If it weren’t for him…
Lizi (Reziko’s sister, 9 years old): I really want Reziko to stop crying. When Reziko cries, we cry with him. But we can’t do anything to help.
“My boy can’t chew food; I pray every time he swallows a piece.”
Mzevinar: My husband and two sons work as janitors. Their salaries, along with social assistance, go towards paying off the loans we took from the bank when Reziko was dying before our eyes! And now we have no money left for anything else.
– How can we ease little Reziko’s life? It’s unbearable to watch the child suffer!
Mzevinar: Reziko has a high fever and chills every day, and his tonsils are infected. “We don’t have money to buy antipyretics, let alone see a doctor.”
Mzevinar: Help us! To survive, Reziko needs to be outside; he needs a special wheelchair! The one we have was given to us, but it doesn’t fit him! The baby’s head falls over and he wants to be held! But my arms can’t hold him for long anymore… Such grief!
“The old wheelchair has no straps, and we have to tie Reziko with a scarf, so he doesn’t fall out.”
“There’s nothing worse than when children constantly ask you for food, and you have nothing to give them. I wouldn’t wish this feeling on anyone.”
– Over the years, Reziko has become heavier. Carrying him must be a real challenge for you?
Mzevinar: My grandson is already 12 years old and weighs almost 30 kilograms, and it’s very hard for me to carry him, my health doesn’t allow it. I’ve had six surgeries, and I’m only half a person now. I have diabetes and frequent epileptic seizures.
Mzevinar: “I didn’t want to talk about myself, but how can I not… I have epilepsy. A seizure can happen at any moment. If I’m holding my grandson at that time, I’ll fall on him. Lord, don’t let me die with my grandson in my arms! Take me alone…”
Mzevinar: My daughter-in-law is seriously ill. The doctors said she developed anemia from constant stress. They also found tumors in her body, and she needs urgent surgery. I feel so sorry for her when she washes Reziko’s bed linens by hand. We don’t have a washing machine.
God forbid anyone feel the pain of choosing between buying medicine or bread for their children!
