The Makhitashvili family, whose fragile roof collapsed during a hurricane, no longer has to huddle in a temporary shelter. From an abandoned school building, they’ve finally returned to their home. Who knows how long they might have suffered if the Chernovetskyi Fund hadn’t written letters to the officials responsible for their welfare. The result of our reminder was impressive – the local administration stepped in and built the Makhitashvili family a new roof.

0901200270SOS! SOS! SOS! A family with eight children found themselves homeless after their house’s roof collapsed. They have nowhere to go and urgently need money for the treatment of their seriously ill son and daughter.
REPOST RIGHT AWAY, MY GOOD MAN! HELP YOUR FRIENDS FIND THE WAY TO GOD!
Due to heavy rain and hurricane-force winds in Akhmeta, the roof of the Mahitashvili family’s home collapsed. Eight children and their parents miraculously survived but are now left without a home. They have nowhere to go.
This is all that’s left of the roof.
The fact that the family survived under these ruins is a true miracle of God.
Badri (father, 54 years old): It was 4 in the morning when we heard a loud crack. I grabbed the sleeping children and ran outside. The day before the tragedy, we decided to move to the next room— perhaps we sensed something bad was coming. We went to sleep with fear, worrying that the ceiling might collapse on us. And the worst happened.
The state has provided them with temporary shelter. It’s one room for ten people in an abandoned building of a former school, where there is no water and no basic amenities.
The children bathe in a basin right in the room. Worms crawl up from the damp floor and bite the children. They are very scared to be here.
Their seriously ill older son is living on the street because there isn’t enough space in the room for him.
Nodari (19 years old): Since the roof collapsed in our house, I’ve been living outside because the room is cramped, and I can’t breathe. I haven’t had a decent night’s sleep there. Only when it rains do I go inside to avoid getting wet and sick. I can’t afford to catch a cold right now. When winter comes, I’ll probably have to cover myself with a quilted jacket. My biggest dream is for our house to be repaired, and the roof replaced. In our house, everyone had their own bed, and we at least had a bathroom. Now, my life and the lives of my brothers and sisters are like a living hell.
– Nodari, you can barely walk. What happened to you?
Nodari: I fell down an elevator shaft and landed on my back from the third floor. They performed spinal surgery on me, which took six hours. Three of my vertebrae were broken. I couldn’t walk or move, and my spinal cord was damaged. It might take years to recover. And if I don’t recover, I might have to live the rest of my life with a catheter and in diapers. I’m 19 years old. It’s so hard to accept this!
“We don’t have money for medication or even to replace the catheter. But this is very dangerous. An infection or sepsis could develop.”
Nodari: “I developed a purulent infection because we didn’t have the money to replace the catheter. My temperature spiked to 40 degrees. We had only one pig, and we had to sell it to buy me medication. Neighbors lent us some money, and we started treatment, because otherwise there was a risk of sepsis, as the doctor warned. I need rehabilitation now, but I don’t even have money for the trip to Tbilisi. The state provides funding, but I can’t get to the doctors. Can you imagine that?
This is Nini, the youngest daughter. She’s only six months old, and she suffers from terrible seizures. But her parents can’t afford to take her to the doctor for tests. The family lives solely on social allowance, which barely covers the cost of medications. The father recently had a stroke and was on a ventilator, but the doctors worked a miracle, knowing that leaving eight children fatherless would be a tragedy. Now he can’t work because of his health issues. The mother occasionally finds work picking grapes or nuts to keep the family.
The children eat at a social canteen because there’s no money left for groceries.

Friends, these little angels can melt the hardest of hearts. How could anyone remain indifferent to such a plight? Eight children are begging us for help. They don’t want to live in these terrible conditions; they just want to go home. Let’s unite and repair the roof for this family, who has given Georgia eight wonderful and decent children.
If you are willing to visit the family and help them in person, here is their address: Akhmeta, 2 Stalin Street (former school building).
Every time you can help someone, just do it, and rejoice that God answers someone’s prayers through you!

Eliso: “We all have new jackets!”
– I take a little peek at what’s in your car? – little Eliso asks.
– You’ll see it all soon enough—and you’ll be so, so happy!
Eliso: Did you notice we have a new roof? And some men are putting in new windows and doors since morning. They make a lot of noise and dust, but Dad says it will be beautiful and warm when they’re done.
Nana, the mother: “What makes us happiest of all is returning to our own home!”
Eliso: Where are we going to look at all the new things?
– Let’s place the bags sent by the friends of the fund in the yard and sort through them. The boxes with appliances will go inside once the windows are installed.
Eliso: Let’s check out the food first! My favorite sausages!!! Cookies! Yogurt!!!
Eliso: “Let’s check out the food first! Yay! Sausages!”
Badri (in the middle) can’t decide between Nutella, Barny cakes, yogurt, or juice. His little forehead furrows deeply from overthinking!
Shalva: Auntie, Eliso is keeping everything she finds for herself!
Eliso: “What do you want from me, Shaliko? You can save some for yourself too—there’s plenty here.”
Shalva: I found a big sausage! I’m going to lift it like a strongman. Wow, it smells so good!”
Shaliko: “It’s like I’m a strongman!”
Finally, Badri made his choice, and his face lit up with joy!
Nodar, the eldest brother: “Alright, kids, don’t be greedy! Put all the food on the table”.
Shalva: “Eliso ran off to stash toys for herself! Someone stop her!
Eliso: “I was the first to find the blocks, the piggy, and the doll!”
“I found the piggy first—so it’s mine!”
The new rattle mesmerizes baby Nini!
– We’ve brought so much for you, there’s no need to hoard anything. Everyone will be happy. Here are diapers and lots of beautiful clothes.
Eliso: Find me a jacket and a headband for my hair!
– Request noted! Kids, whoever wants a new jacket? Line up for fittings!
Nana, the mother: You can’t even imagine how much we love the Chernovetskyi Fund! The kids got excited as soon as they learned about your visit and have been eagerly waiting since then. Dato even skipped school to greet you.
After months of depression and hardship, I finally feel like myself again. So much came crashing down on us all at once—we lost our home and had to live, all ten of us, cramped in a tiny room where the municipality had placed us. After that, they completely forgot about us. On top of that, my baby Nini was having seizures! It was like living in hell—I didn’t know how to help her!
For Nini, we picked out this cute little jacket. Look at mommy’s little gem!
– How is baby Nini doing now?
Nana: It’s been six months now, since June, thank God, and she’s doing fine—no more seizures. The Fund helped us with medicine, and everything is back to normal. Thank you, friends. I’m so happy to be back in our home, within our own walls. I know there’s a lot of mess and dirt right now, but we’ll clean it all up and settle in. For me, the most important thing is that you pushed the authorities to fix our roof! They’re a bit upset with us now (smiles).
– Sometimes you have to write and speak up. They don’t like criticism, of course. But we’re glad they listened to us in the end and took real action. We’re grateful for the collaboration!
Nana: I’m so happy with how wonderfully everything turned out. And thank you for going beyond just the roof. We’ll be warm this winter. The friends of the Chernovetskyi Fund gave us windows and doors as a present. Winters here are so harsh, and metal-plastic is the best option.
A house that’s 50 years old is getting a second life—with a new roof, new windows, and new doors!
Winters here are so harsh, and metal-plastic is the best option
– The workers seem to be finishing up the windows. Let’s clean up a bit, and we can bring in the fridge and the stove, and then the new beds too.
Nana: Oh, you brought that too?! So many things! Thank you so much! We wish blessings, health, and success to you all! Badri, do you hear this? (Addresses her husband). They brought appliances for us too!
It’s time to bring the appliances inside.
While no one’s looking, Shaliko presses the buttons on the new stove. But Nodar, the all-seeing older brother, catches him.
Badri, the father: Of course, I hear it – I’m just politely waiting for my turn, my dear wife (smiles). If I said I didn’t expect help from my fellow Georgians, that wouldn’t be true. Our people never leave anyone out on the street. But I never imagined the help would be so personal and strangers called me, encouraged me, and asked what else we needed. ‘How are you, my friend? How’s your family? This isn’t the end—we’ll help more. What do you need right now, brother? Just say it.’
That’s how we do things! My heart is full of pride and hope. Thank you, my Georgia, and my people! May God grant us all happiness! May our children and grandchildren grow up in prosperity and never even hear about problems like homelessness.
Tomorrow, a new day will dawn, and I already know what to do—I have plans for our future. The Chernovetskyi Fund gave me that tomorrow. The best thank-you from my kids is their joy and laughter. Look at them today—they’re playing, being mischievous, and skipping their naps. Let them! I’m enjoying it! It might take a while, but we’ll clean up, fix everything, and live happily.
Shaliko and Eliso have already decided to start living happily today!
They are now excited about their new beds!
– What do you need right now to speed up the process so that settling in doesn’t take too long?
Badri: The ceilings need to be done—drywall would be great. My wife also really needs a washing machine; it’s tough washing clothes for ten people. One thing worries me more than fixing up the house—my son Nodar… We need to take him to the doctor…
REPOST RIGHT AWAY, MY GOOD MAN! HELP YOUR FRIENDS TO THE WORK OF MERCY!
Nodar, the eldest son in the Makhitashvili family, has a serious spinal injury and needs medical attention. Let’s help him see a doctor! Additionally, to make the rooms livable sooner, drywall ceilings are needed. How we wish all these difficulties could be left behind as soon as possible!
