11-year-old Anna-Maria goes hungry so that her tiny baby brother can eat… Help the children!

Eight-month-old Gabriel cries from hunger and chokes on his tears… His mother has no milk, and the parents cannot afford baby formula – they don’t even have money for bread. Imagine for a moment that this is your child. What would you feel hearing this crying and having no way to help?

This is Gabriel’s sister, Anna-Maria. She is 11 years old. To somehow calm her brother, she gives him a bottle of water. But will that make a baby full?

Anna-Maria, 11-year-old: “I didn’t eat anything today, my stomach hurts a lot. But I’ll endure it. The main thing is that my little brother eats. At school I stay hungry too – I don’t buy food. You need money there… at least one lari a day. I don’t have it.”

The children’s mother, Nino, is now four months pregnant. She is starving too – which means the baby in her womb is starving as well. Nino can’t afford to go to a doctor; she doesn’t even have money for transportation. How is the family surviving on a social allowance of 400 lari? 

Nino, 31 years old (mother): “I am ready to give my life for my children. I just don’t want them to grow up the way I did – in poverty.”

What Nino told the Fund’s journalist is impossible to hear without tears.

Nino, 31-years-old (mother): “My first husband was a drug addict. He beat me for 10 years, almost to death. Little Anna-Maria gathered her courage and called the police to save me. My daughter said: ‘I don’t need a father like that.’ Now he is in prison.”

Fate gave Nino a second chance: she married again. Her husband Gio accepts Anna-Maria as his own daughter, cares for little Gabriel, and does everything he can to feed the family. 

Nino, 31-years-old (mother): “Gio has a hernia and is in constant pain. He was referred for surgery, but he refused – if he goes into the hospital, who will feed the children? Who will buy them diapers?” We can’t even afford painkillers… Yet he still goes to work – for 20 lari, for 10 lari – just so the children won’t be hungry.”

The windows in their home are covered with plastic, the walls are cracked and crumbling.  

Anna-Maria does her homework on her knees – there is no table or chairs in the house. She goes to school in the same clothes every day. 

There is one pair of shoes for three people in the family – Anna-Maria, her mother, and her grandmother. 

Nino, 31-years-old (mother): “When my daughter comes home from school, my mother-in-law takes off her slippers and gives them to her. And she stays barefoot…”

Anna-Maria, 11-year-old: “I need notebooks, books, pens and pencils. And a new school bag. I study well and don’t want to fall behind because I don’t have school supplies. And also… I really love fruit and sweets. But we never have them.”

 Anna-Maria, 11-year-old: “My mom has to wash clothes by hand. The washing machine is broken. I don’t know if there is a family more in need than ours.”

It is cold in the house, and the stove barely heats. There’s almost no firewood left, and every day my grandfather-in-law, despite his heart problems, goes out into the field to gather wood so the little ones don’t freeze.

This family urgently needs your help – food, baby formula, clothes, shoes, beds, blankets, a table, chairs, cupboards for dishes, and medicine. Their home needs windows and doors installed.
