0901200270“Mommy, I can’t breathe! There is no air! Mommy, help!”
Every day my child’s cough just breaks my heart.
Little Ketevan (1-year-old), Salome (4-year-old), Anna (6-year-old), David (7-year-old), Mariam (9-year-old), Luka (11-year-old), Levani (15-year-old) rushed out to meet us.
There is the whole world in their eyes, so beautiful, so sad! They are hungry and tormented. God help us…
“Seven children and we can barely fit in this tiny semi-basement space. It is very damp here, and the children take turns sleeping in the bed. The rest sleep on the floor and eat right there. Oh Lord, how terrible! – mother Maya says, – for the sake of our children we are ready to do anything, just to keep them, just to teach them, they are so talented – athletes, artists and all these talents are for you, my Georgia!Just help not to lose them! We beg for help all friends of the Fund, all dads and moms … “- Maya cried.
Seven children live in a basement and wait for your help, Georgia! Our compatriots Maya Tivishvili, her husband Giorgi (42-year-old) and their seven wonderful children, Levani (15-year-old), Luka (11-year-old), Mariam (9-year-old), David (7-year-old), Anna (6-year-old), Salome (4-year-old), and little Ketevan (1-year-old), can barely fit in a tiny semi-basement space. They can’t breathe there!
Lack of air, smell of dampness, poverty and hunger – that’s how they live! The terrible reality they face. The children sleep on dilapidated beds, they eat sitting on the floor or beds, there are not enough chairs for all of them to sit and eat – when there is anything, of course. We don’t even have a fridge at home.
– I pray to God so that it would end soon. I’m sounding the alarm! And only you have responded to my desperate call for help – exclaims Maya in tears. Since her dear husband’s health failed, the only hope of the large family has been the hope that their generous compatriots will help.
– Maya, what is your biggest problem?
Maya: I just want to breathe freely. Not to think every night where to get some food for the children for the next day. Stop watching the children sleep one upon another. There is no room here, we are trying to fit somehow in this closet. We have neither fridge, nor washing machine, let alone a TV and a computer! Seems like we live in a den.
We have no computer and no Internet, therefore the children missed a whole semester at school!
– I wonder how you manage to fit here – 9 people in a tiny room.
Maya: We are trying somehow, with God’s help. But it is unbearable, indeed, especially when it is so hot. We are suffocating because of the cramped conditions and lack of air. My son David (7-year-old) already has respiratory failure and chronic bronchitis, he has the hardest time. I try to go out with him more often because he feels quite sick at home – his cough doubles. I can imagine how bad he is: listening to his cough makes me cry. He is my baby.
– Is anybody else sick in your family? Tell me more about the health problems.
Maya: My husband is sick as well, he has a blood clot in his leg, so Giorgi cannot work. It is contraindicated for him to strain, lift heavy objects, or walk a lot. My two sons are sick. You know about David, and the other one, Luka (11-year-old) has stomach ulcer. Ulcer at the age of 11! This is because we cannot afford proper food. I also have health problems – high blood pressure and problems with the spine, osteochondrosis.
Did they prescribe any treatment? Surgery perhaps?
Maya: No surgeries, thank God! Giorgi does not treat his blood clot, all this is expensive. The local government refuses to finance the treatment, saying that the situation is not critical! So we have to pay for everything, but where can we get the necessary means? Our basic concern are the children, so that their health would not worsen. Recently I took Luka to the doctor – one visit costs 170 GEL!
– Maya, let’s talk about pleasant things. How did you family start?
Maya: I was 20 when I saw Giorgi for the first time, he was 23. We met by chance. He was handsome, strong and brave – a professional wrestler. I just could not help falling in love. We went out for three years, and then finally got married and moved from Kakheti to Tbilisi. It is a true love!I can’t imagine my life without him – he is my life. And my children, of course! (laughs)
– It’s great that you have each other! Does anybody help you? Maybe parents or relatives?
Maya: Parents help us as much as they can. Sometimes they send us some food. They themselves are in a difficult situation, they live only on their pension … Imagine how hard it is to take money from them, but there is no other way. Sometimes my sister and brother help me with food, but they have to take care of their families, so I can’t ask for more. If they kept my seven children, who would keep theirs?
– Have you ever supposed that you will find yourself in such a situation? How did you imagine your future?
Maya: We only wanted to have our own home and provide our children with a decent life. In our dreams we saw a big, happy and healthy family. Just usual thigs people dream of! But life is like a chess game. You never know what the next move will be and how it will change things.
I wanted to become an English translator, I have higher education. Giorgi is a professional sportsman – that was how he used to earn his daily bread. We thought we would get it made. But when we found out that Gio had a blood clot, it was about 10 years ago, it became clear that his career as a sportsmen had ended. I had little children in my arms, and I was unable to start working. We appealed to the state for help, and since then, we have got a social allowance.
I don’t like to complain, because everything is the God’s will. No matter whether we have got any appliances or beds – people can live without that. But when I see the hungry eyes of my kids, who say: “Mommy, we are not hungry”, when I see the rags they have to wear, my heart breaks. God forbid every mother from such pain.
– What about the local government? Do they help in any way besides paying the rent?
Maya: No, but we are grateful for what they do. Otherwise, we would have already perished somewhere under the bridge, like homeless dogs. However, we still have to add some 50 GEL from our pocket.
– Do you believe in God? Where do you see the salvation?
Maya: We do indeed! Our family is very religious! Trust in God prevents us from perishing! And the salvation is in God! Since God heals human souls, makes them pure and holy, people will not let their neighbors be hurt. With this hope I appealed to your Fund. I knew it was the abode of the soul-healed people! Holy people! I saw you help lots of people!
– Maya, tell me about your children. Do they go to school and kindergarten?
Maya: I am proud of my children! They are so talented! Levani (15-year-old), Luka (11-year-old), Mariam (9-year-old), David (7-year-old) go to school. Anna (6-year-old) will go to the first form this year, Salome (4-year-old) goes to the kindergarten, and little Ketevan (1-year-old) is too young.
Levani helps me a lot, he studies well, I am proud of his academic performance and dignity. He is just like his father – he also loves wrestling and attends wrestling classes! He can also draw well – he is a very talented boy!My younger son Luka attends judo classes and loves math! Mariam is really good at singing and dancing and she has good skills in math. Anna and David love drawing like Levani. Salome is my little sun, she is so joyful, she is always ready to laugh. Condensed milk and chocolate cookies is her favorite sweet-stuff! I don’t even remember the last time I have bought it. Ketevan is my angel! She snuggles up to me and doesn’t let me go. And if I go, she bursts into tears, my precious.
What do you give them to eat?
Maya: I can’t give them anything else but potatoes and pasta. Our meager income prevents us from buying other things. They love fish and meat. But we have to pass by the counters with these products. If we are invited on a visit anywhere and there is fish on the table, I know for sure: in five minutes it will be gone! (laughs)
– Levani, you are the eldest, let’s start with you! What are your hobbies? How do you study? What subjects do you like?
Levani (15-year-old): I take wrestling classes! This is my favorite activity! I want to become a famous wrestler – to bring honor to our Georgia! So that everyone admires me and says: “This undefeated guy is a Georgian!”
I have no particular urge for school subjects, but I love drawing! Everybody likes my drawings, I’ll show them to you. When I draw my soul feels so good! I would like to attend the Arts School so much, but I know we have no money for that. My parents have to pay for my wrestling classes.
– Does your coach often praise you? Levani (15-year-old): Our coach praises us only for exceptional merits. He wants to raise us as real men and sportsmen. Therefore, we all strive to do the most exceptional, to make him tell us: “Well done, that was great!” The coach often tells my mother that I am a diligent and talented guy.
– If you had a chance, what would you do for your mother?Levani (15-year-old): I would make my mother never be in need, and never be afraid of tomorrow. And I would never let her cry! I want to become a cool and famous wrestler, like Vladimir Khinchegashvili, so that my family would never be in need.
Luka (11-year-old): I want to become a famous judoka and help to my family too. I’d like to be like Varlam Liparteliani! Then everyone will shout my name. Do you know who he is? He is the best judoka in the world! He is Georgian! I want to be like him! Then I will buy everything to my mother, sisters and father. But not to Levani, because he will be famous and rich too and he will buy everything himself.
– What else do you like, Luka? Which school subjects? Or maybe you draw like your brother?
Luka (11-year-old): No, I don’t draw. But I am fond of math! I have only highest marks in this subject. The teacher always praises me!
– David, now it’s your turn! What would you like to get as a present?
David (7-year-old): A computer, of course! We don’t have one. We don’t even have mobile phones.
– What will you do on it?
David (7-year-old): Learn! And search the answers for various questions. And play!
– Mariam, why are you so quiet? Tell me about you!
Mariam (9-year-old): I like singing, I even sang on TV once. I love math too.
– Do you attend singing classes?
Mariam: No, but I would like to. Unfortunately, we haven’t so much money. Mom and Dad take Levani and Luka to sports.
– Have you decided yet who you want to be in the future?
Mariam: Not yet. But it would be great to connect my life with music.
Anna (6-year old): Talk to me too, please! I will go to school this year! Can you imagine? I can’t wait! I think I will study well and my parents will be proud of me! I like reading and writing rhymes. I will love studying!
– Well-done, Anna! Do you know what you want to be when you grow up?
Anna (6-year old): Yes-yes! I want to be a cook! I like cooking! I always help my mother to cook: I boil pasta, then add the tomato sauce, cut the onions. Everything turns out so delicious!
– What other food do you like?
Anna (6-year old): Fish! I also like buckwheat, rice, chocolate. Many things!
Salome (4-year-old) Ma’am, why don’t you ask me? I love bananas, grapes and sweets. And dolls! I had my favorite doll, but I don’t have it anymore! Do you know why? Because now we have a real, living doll – Ketevan! Look how cute she is! Keti is my most favorite doll now!
– Aren’t you jealous of mom for the baby?
Salome (4-year old): No, why? Daddy and mommy love all of us! It’s just that Keti is still very little and can’t do anything herself, so my mother cannot leave her.
– What do you want to be when you grow up?
Salome (4-year old): A movie actress! Because they all are beautiful!
– Maya, you are lucky! You have wonderful children!
Maya: Thank you! It’s a pleasure for me to hear that!
– What is your family income? What is it enough for?
Maya: We get a social allowance, our income is 680 GEL per month. It is enough for food and for some clothes. We also manage to take Levani and Luka to sports classes, it’s 40 GEL per each. I know, we are not in the position to think about sports classes, but I’d rather not dine, but I won’t deprive the children of simple joys and making their dreams come true … I don’t want them feel frustrated. Although they sometimes feel like this, because we cannot afford to pay for their trips to training camps or to prepares for the competitions. All this is not free and there are no discounts. Levani is dreaming of an art school, but no matter how hard we try, we cannot get money for that.
– What is your biggest dream? What do you think, you need most in your home?
Maya: I do not want to be afraid of tomorrow, that I will have no food for my children. We need any kind of food, to prevent my children from permanent hunger, we need clothes for them, a fridge, a washing machine, kids are also dreaming of a computer and TV. I feel embarrassed to ask for all these things! But it’s all for my children.
– Why did you decide to address us?
Maya: I have heard a lot about the Fund, and a read a lot about you! Believe me, I appealed to a number of organizations, but you were the only one to respond and express your willingness to help. Thank you for that!
Almost whole Georgia will know about you after reading this article. Would you like to meet Fund’s friends?
Maya: We would like to meet these kind people. God bless them all!
