“You are my happiness, granddaughter, you are my love!” Maia strokes the head and hugs her twelve-year-old granddaughter Anano to her heart. Anano opens her mouth, smiles, looking at her with huge blue eyes. She also wants to say something to her grandmother – to the only person who did not leave her, did not let her go, and led her for twelve years, holding her hand like this. But she can’t do that… She can’t rush in from the end of the yard and hug her granny like the other kids do; she cannot collect spring flowers to congratulate the person whom she loves as a mother on Mother’s Day.

“Anano, grandma loves you more than anyone in the world”

“You are my happiness, granddaughter, you are my love!” Maia strokes the head and hugs her twelve-year-old granddaughter Anano to her heart. Anano opens her mouth, smiles, looking at her with huge blue eyes. She also wants to say something to her grandmother – to the only person who did not leave her, did not let her go, and led her for twelve years, holding her hand like this. But she can’t do that… She can’t rush in from the end of the yard and hug her granny like the other kids do; she cannot collect spring flowers to congratulate the person whom she loves as a mother on Mother’s Day.
“Here, look at her bones,” Maia tells me. Then, with great care, she pulls back the neck of the sweater, and I see a picture that the human heart can hardly stand … She shows me her thin wrists, a lowered lower back, deformed chest bones. I look at her and think: “Lord, how unlucky this little girl is – she got so many diseases. How unlucky she is that even her father left her. It’s like everyone forgot about her existence. Only her grandmother lives her everyday life, breathes her air.
Anano Kadaria lives in the village of Darcheli (Zugdidi municipality) with her grandparents. She was seven months old when the doctor made a terrible diagnosis of “acute form of cerebral palsy with concomitant epileptic seizures, microcephaly” to her. In addition to that Anano has problems with vision and teeth.

She’s so skinny that you can count every bone on her…

– Maia, could you please tell us Anano’s story? What happened to her? Are these diseases congenital or acquired? Where her parents are?
Maia: This tiny creature is my first granddaughter, the first robin. God, how happy I was when she was born. Being a grandmother is a great happiness. My daughter Mariam had a difficult delivery, but the doctors told us that the baby was born perfectly healthy.
She was one and a half months old when she began to cry incessantly. Her parents were young and inexperienced, and stubborn, and were in no hurry to take her to the doctor. Up to seven months, both the child and the mother suffered. My daughter Mariam did not sleep at night with Anano. I demanded many times that my son-in-law immediately took her to the hospital. But no one listened to me… until the child completely passed out. She was almost dead when we brought her to the hospital. With the help of doctors, we brought my baby back from the other world. And then I learned about this terrible diagnosis. (Covers his ears with his hands.) I keep hearing the voices of doctors even now. After that, my baby seemed to become a burden for everyone. Her father managed to endure for only three years, and then the family fell apart …
– What about your daughter?
Maia: I took both of them home. Five months later, her father started a new family, and he never even paid alimony to Anano. Then my daughter and I raised her, looked after her. We did what we could. At that time both my husband and I were healthier. We could do more. Five years later Mariam started new family too. My baby became a burden to her as well.
– So, you decided to completely take care of Anano?
Maia: I though, I would be able to cope. And I managed to cope until my husband, and I started having health problems. Besiki has high blood pressure. I need gallbladder to be removed. But it would be better if all this bothered me a hundred times more, if only everything was fine with my Anano.
I die every time she has an epileptic attack. If something happens to her, I won’t live another minute! And her teeth hurt badly. The doctor does not risk removing them, because he is afraid that she will have an epileptic attack. That’s why we try to alleviate pain with the help of ointments. This pain is sometimes so unbearable that we stay awake all night together. I have not slept for four nights, but I have already got used to it. If only nothing happened to her! It seems to me that even if they hang me by my legs, I will survive. (Wipes away tears.)
– How often epileptic attacks happen to her?
Maia: Do you see the pills? Look how many pills there are! (I look at the medications trying to count them.) We have to buy about seventeen kinds of drugs. Only one of these is funded by the social service. When we manage to buy all the pills the attacks happen to her more rarely. And more rarely we find ourselves in hospital – once in two or three months. It means “more rarely” to us. Everyone knows us there.
– What is your income?
Maia: I can’t work. Whom to leave Anano with? She completely depends on me. My husband takes part-time job, whenever he finds it, when something appears. They pay little there. He often gets sick with physical load. Basically, we rely only on social allowance and Anano’s pension. And half of this tiny amount goes to the bank. The bank immediately cuts off money on the payday.
– Probably you had to take loan because of Anano?
Maia: Yes. Is it possible to cope with health problems and everyday routine when you live like this?
– Does her mom come to visit Anano?
Maia: She comes to visit her on her birthday and holidays. She helps us as much as he can. She is short on funds. She also has a very hard life.
– Anano understands only you, and now too.
She looks at you with such a smile.
Maia: Right now, she smiles not just at me. She feels the positive aura of people, your voice is also pleasant to her, that’s why she smiles. She understands that you came with good intentions.
Usually, when she smiles only at me like that, she basically asks to pick her up and caress her. But I almost always hold her in my arms. It makes her feel calmer. For me, her smile and health are the most precious thing. My little one is twelve years old. She’s as light as a breeze. She weighs only twelve kilograms, which does not correspond to her age at all.

“That smile of hers is a fortune to me!”

– What does she like the most?
Maya: She likes watching TV. She likes listening to songs of Rati Durglishvili. She even hums in her own way when she listens to them. Then she’s in a good mood. But if electricity goes then hell begins: she screams, “swears”, cries. She can start having attack because of experiences.

Anano listens to the songs of Rati Durglishvili. She’s in a good mood

– Do they often cut electricity?
Maia: I mean, they cut it for non-payment. We cannot pay utility bills. Recently, both gas and electricity got cut at the same time. So that I could cook porridge for the child, my husband removed the seal from the gas meter for a while. They fined us. We have no gas since then.
How can one’s heart withstand all this?! It is very hard to me – I want to cry all the time. I’m sorry, I’m swallowing my tears. I don’t want Anano to feel my bad mood. It somehow gets through to her.
– Does the state, local authorities help you in any way?
Maia: We were assigned social allowance just two years ago. They did not give us anything before that. I don’t know what they saw in my ruined hut. (Points to holes in the ceiling, from where water drips loudly into an old metal bowl.) But they did not give us the corresponding scores. Although in the end, when I came to write a statement again, I met one gentleman there, at the agency.  I don’t even know his name, but I bless him all the time. He said: “What do they mean that “you are not entitled to”?” And helped us.
– Do you take Anano to a special massage, which she is entitled to?
Maia: Unfortunately, we found out about this aid too late. Population in the villages is poorly informed. We went for two years, and then the massage therapist refused to continue the course – Anano’s bones became very thin. You’ve seen that. What kind of massages can we talk about, when even some rough touch can lead to terrible consequences? My poor girl almost melts… (Cries.)
– Does Anano have a special wheelchair that fits her?
Maia: Yes, we got it from the state. But every day, Anano’s lower back is getting lower. Her skeleton changes so fast that she does not feel permanently comfortable in any wheelchair. My God, if you only knew how hard is to me to talk about this.
– How did you learn about our Fund?
Maia: I believe in God, I believe that good people exist, I love every employee, every friend and subscriber of your Fund. They always do good deeds, don’t they? They have already saved us from extreme poverty. It was very hard to me to address you again. But now I am in such a position that I will even sit in the street with my hand out, if only to save my little angel. We starve! Anano needs nutritious food, medications, diapers. Three diapers per day are not enough to us. How can I buy all this with the pennies that the state gives us? It’s just unimaginable…

“I just want the roof not to leak!”

And what about our house? You can see where we sleep. With the help of our relatives, we added three rooms to the wooden house where we have lived until now and where it was dangerous to live. Now, can you hear the rain falling? Anano often listens to this sound. Every time it rains, I have to move her out of her room. It’s already leaking from the ceiling in her room too.
– What would you say to our faithful friends, subscribers of our Fund?
Maia: I don’t need phones, appliances, or clothes. We have nowhere to go. All I need is food, medications, diapers, and a normal room for Anano. I want us to be able to pay utility bills on time. I want my baby to always have warm food and she can listen to her favorite music.
My sweet and beloved people! I beg you, help us, save my twelve-year-old creature, who weighs twelve kilograms, otherwise I will die. The sun rises and sets with Anano for me. My tomorrow does not exist without her!

This girl must survive!

***
I ended the interview with a broken heart. I tried to be restrained and not to let my emotions come over me. The thought that came to me at the beginning does not leave me: how unlucky this little blue-eyed girl is in life! But she was lucky with her grandmother – grandmother was given her by fate, so warm and loving! And she was lucky with us! She was lucky with us, my dear employees of the Fund, my dear readers! Because I know that you will not pass by this post without a reaction and will certainly do your best to support Anano – grandma’s twelve-kilogram happiness!
