“They say a person can endure hunger for 30 days. I starved for seven days – I could not stand it anymore. Then I lost consciousness. What to do, there was no one to ask for bread … I was embarrassed to ask. So, I kept starving… When I felt bad, I left the house, and I don’t remember anything what happened after that…”- tells us a 52-year-old woman – Lela Osepashvili – who was completely exhausted by a long illness and was left without hope because of loneliness. She weighs only 42 kilograms. Lela has breast cancer. She also had a stroke, and her speech has not fully recovered. Besides that, she suffers multiple diseases: inflammation of the gallbladder, rheumatism, vein disease. Due to a decrease in immunity, she often catches colds and suffers from pneumonia.

 “I cry all the time – I can’t recall anything good…”

Lela Osepashvili rents a room, about ten square meters large. She has no heating, no bathroom. She only dreams about her own toilet.  If you knew how hard it is for her to go downstairs from the second floor every single minute! Well, what a comfort can we talk about when a woman starves most of the time?!
– Lela, tell us about your problems
Lela: I don’t want to bother your wonderful readers. I will tell you in a nutshell that I am a person with a “not” particle, that is: not-happy, not-capable, not having a job, not having a home. My days begin and end – not fun, not happy. I have neither health nor strength to work, I am sick and abandoned by everyone.
Many times, I have been completely hungry. Now I use the social canteen – they barely included me to the list. But… How can I get there when I can’t even get out of bed?
– Lela, why is it hard for you to talk?
Lela: 16 years ago, I needed an operation on my cecum, and then problems with my uterus were discovered and it had to be removed. It was not funded then – I had to sell my apartment to stay alive. Well, I mean… I had one small room, but it was mine – I did not pay rent and did not wander… In general, it all started with this.
I was left homeless. I experienced so much that I had a stroke because of that. If the owner of the apartment had not found me then and helped me, I would not be alive now. One side of me was paralyzed and I couldn’t talk. Then, gradually, my abilities recovered. I started walking, but it’s still hard for me to talk – more or less… That’s my story.
– But the story of your illnesses did not end there…
Lela: No, the story continues, with an even more serious diagnosis. One year ago, I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I urgently needed surgery to prevent metastases from spreading. They removed the damaged part of my breast. After that, I constantly need the control and supervision of doctors. But with my 140 lari disability pension and 50 lari social allowance I can’t even buy food. What doctors and medications can we talk about?! They cut off 42 GEL from my pension because of an old loan. The loan I took because of my illness … I don’t know what to grieve about – that I was dying, or that I survived. Life and death are equal for me.

I have such marks all over my body. It was hard to me to endure all the surgeries…”

– Lela, life is the most valuable thing that the Lord gives us …
Lela: Well, but what is the point of such a life, in loneliness, in poverty? When I couldn’t stand it, I tried this (shows a trace from an attempt to open the veins on the wrist.) I haven’t eaten fruits for so long… When I pass by street vendors here, in the neighborhood, I close my eyes for not to lose consciousness…

How long should these supplies be enough for this unfortunate woman?!

– Do your relatives help you?
Lela: My brother and parents turned away from me, forgot about me, why do my relatives need me? No one cares about me. Who cares about the poor relation who needs help? I am a burden for them.
– Why your family forgot about you?
Lela: My brother wanted to have everything, and my parents always fulfilled his wishes. Now, mom and dad are no longer alive, I don’t want to remember the bad, sorry.
– Does anyone come to visit you?
Lela: Only the owner of the apartment that I used to rent visits me, may the Lord bless her family. If not for them the fence on my grave would have already been repainted many times! But I feel embarrassed in front of them. I only hope on you. I live only with this spark of hope. I know how great is the power of kindness of your Fund’s friends. Maybe someone will take to heart the story of poor Lela. All I need is a visit to the doctor, checkups, food, and medications. Everything else is of secondary importance.

“I can neither buy medication, nor go to the doctor … I hope for the Lord and good people … ”

– You have no amendments at all in this tiny shelter.
Lela: You said exactly… It’s a shelter… Or rather, it’s a dungeon! Consider my plea as the last wish of a person condemned to death. I don’t know if dawn will come for me tomorrow at all. Well. I feel bad here. Look at this poverty, I don’t even have place to put my clothes. Do you know how I bathe? I lay cellophane on the floor. Here are small basins and buckets to bring water. I can’t move anything big. That’s how I bathe, in parts. I have no heating, and it is especially hard for me in winter. If I only had a hair dryer. I always get colds when my hair is wet. I’ve had pneumonia twice this year.

“The most of all I miss fruits and juice… But I have to endure…”

– Lela, do the authorities help you in any manner?
Lela: I get an allowance of 50 lari. They sometimes suspend it and then pay it again. (Shakes her head). How can one leave a person like me without these pennies, which are not even enough for bread?! I get a disability pension of 140 lari, and the bank cuts off a part of it because of the loan I took earlier. I needed this loan for treatment. But what, pray tell, these 190 gels is enough for a sick and helpless person, especially when they are cut off? Recently, one piece of good news has given me back the joy of life…
– What kind of news?
Lela: I was listed as a homeless. Maybe I will get a roof over my head before I die. Maybe I won’t have to wait long, because with my health condition, I definitely won’t be able to. It was the loss of my home that caused all my misfortunes. Maybe I won’t die without deigning to be buried from my home … (cries)

“These are my kitchen utensils… Although, when there is no food, the kitchen loses its purpose!”

– What are you talking about Lela, it is not time for you to die! Faithful friends of our Fund will definitely read your story, and they will not just help you, but they will also visit you personally.
Lela: I only hope for that. God bless all the kind people. They are who warm this world.

Hope that my life full of suffering will not end here!

***
Lela’s eyes filled with tears. Then she recalled what a strong, athletic woman she was. She worked at a construction site like a man. And this damned disease, hunger, and poverty at once had devoured her and deprived her of her strength. Lela believes in God and kindness. Let’s not deprive her of her last hope and faith. It’s time to support this person in need and lend her a helping hand.
If you willing to visit Lela Osepashvili in person, her current address is: Tbilisi, Nadzaladevi District, 15 Sakviri Street.
