0901200270 The large family of Gorgodze-Gvelesiani crossed the
poverty line long ago. These wonderful children in the photo have been
surrounded by a terrible situation of squalor and grey life from an early age.
They are deprived of warmth and comfort, normal food and medicines, clothes and
toys. The whole family is housed in a single room of an abandoned building
where the windows are covered with cellophane, rain is pouring from the
ceiling, there is a terrible mess, and iron beds serve as a dining table.
The government, as if not noticing the miserable existence of this family,
distanced itself from it, actually contributing to the descent of these people
to the social bottom. It seems that neither the majority Deputy, nor the public
of the municipality are interested in the depressing life of their fellow
citizens who are dragging a miserable existence in the struggle for survival!
We talked to Nargiza Gvelesiani, the mother of four small
children, and asked her to share her problems and concerns with us.
– Tell me, how many years have you been living here and in general, what
is this building?
Nargiza: This is a former printing house. My husband, Imeda Gorgodze, and I
come from a nearby village. Our parents were very poor, barely making two ends
meet, and we decided to come and settle in Bagdati. These premises were
allocated by the state to families who did not have a roof over their heads. We
were among them. In Soviet times it used to be a printing house, but at the
time of our settlement, it had already been in an abandoned state.
– You were placed temporarily?
Nargiza: No. We were with ownership for the house and had to
furnish it ourselves. Of course, we were grateful that we were not left on the
street, but we have not been able to repair the room, to make it at least a
little bit fit for living.
– Why so?
Nargiza: You know, my husband and I are poorly educated people; we have no
profession, so it is very difficult to find a job. When there is a one-time
assignment somewhere on a private construction site, my husband does his best
to do it, but it happens so rarely…
– And what do you do for living?
Nargiza: – We receive social allowance. This is our only
“income”. All the money is spent on food, medicines, diapers; we also
pay for electricity… For the winter we buy firewood, which is very expensive.
My husband made a homemade stove, which is our salvation when it is winter and
very cold outside.
– Do the local government or majoritarian deputy help you? Did you ask them for
help? Many people, on ignorance, ignore the factor of the Deputy. They do not
even know that they have the full right to ask him for help, because every
Deputy is obliged to take care of his voters, be interested in their needs and
help in improving their social and living conditions.
Nargiza: I kindly ask you to address the Deputy on our behalf. We don’t even
really know how to write, let alone stating our needs and problems. Thank you
in advance.
– Some people unfairly condemn large families who live in poverty. They wonder
why to give birth to children if parents can’t support them. How would you
react to that?
Nargiza: Look how many there are families in need. Does it mean that our people
should not multiply? I am a Christian and I believe that if God gives a child,
I cannot kill the embryo. Another thing is that it is very difficult to feed,
dress, educate, when there is no work and normal conditions for life. But I
believe that the Lord will not leave us in trouble and in the person of good
people will show his help!
– What are you dreaming about?
Nargiza: I dream about the happy life of my children, but now it is so
difficult for us that I dream how to feed and dress them… I dream about a
TV-set, a refrigerator, a washing machine… We do not have any of this…
– And what do your children dream about?
Gennadiy (7 years old): I dream about sneakers. At school everybody has them,
and I don’t…
– And what grade are you in and what do you want to become?
Gennadiy: I’m in the first grade and want to become a police
officer…
Tariel (6 years old) : I want to be a policeman too…
– And what do you dream about?
Tariel: I dream to go to school… Mom says it will be on 1st
September…
Tiko (3 years old): I dream of a new doll that will look like my mother…
Friends, these little angels – Gennadiy, Tariel, Tico and Rostom need our
urgent help! We cannot leave these children without compassion and support.
Waiting until the authorities help them means ignoring their trouble. Therefore, let us act together, together
we will help them and show that a lot of good people worry about their
fate!
Children are angels on the Earth! And their birth is God’s holding! He sends
them to the Earth to see who of the people is worthy of his care and help, who
has a soul and compassion!
