Tsiala (the mother): “Before the surgery, the doctor told me: ‘Keep in mind, I’m taking him in, and I will return him twice as tall as before.’ Seeing my son standing up straight is indescribable!” For all of his 17 years, Shalva walked with bent legs due to cerebral palsy, leaning on his mother or grandmother’s hand. And for all those 17 years, he dreamed of standing up straight, walking on straight legs. A few days ago, the family experienced that thrilling, long-awaited moment. For the first time, Shalva’s mother, grandmother, and the entire family saw him as he was meant to be – tall, stately as a cypress, and with the happiest smile. The entire country helped Shalva get on his feet. Friends of the Chernovetskyi Fund funded the surgery in Yerevan.
“He’s now taller than me and his mother! – says grandmother Manana. – This is the greatest day in our and his life!”

16-year-old Shalva finds it difficult to walk on his semi-bent legs. He can’t straighten them!  Surgery could be his salvation! It’s up to us whether this young man will be able to dance at his graduation!

Friends, recently Shalva got a real opportunity for recovery!

He’s a handsome Georgian, isnt he?

“Even now, my grandmother accompanies me to school, holding my hand just like when I was a child.”

Manana: If destiny had destined him to die, it would have happened at birth, and he wouldn’t have made it to 16… that’s what the doctors used to predict. “If he reaches 14, we might consider surgery; if he can stand on his own, surgery might be an option,” even though hope was in short supply. Nevertheless, Shalva defied the odds, growing into a handsome and intelligent young man. His lifelong dream, since childhood, was to reach 14 and undergo the surgery that could spare him a life of disability, allowing him to emerge as an independent Georgian man!

Shalva: I’ve waited and dreamt of this surgery my entire life! Even the kindest person in the world, walking on their own two legs, can’t understand the suffering I endured in anticipation. When I turned 14 and the doctor said I could stand up, every night I dreamed of walking with friends and enjoying life. But now I’m 16! The surgery costs $8,000, and my grandmother and I can’t gather that amount. Unless we kneel and beg, beg for it to be done for free! Yet, everyone says it’s impossible!”

“I can’t straighten my knees; I can’t walk on my own… just a few steps!”

Manana: “I pray for a miracle from God for my boy. I believe in the friends of your foundation.”

– Is the surgery very expensive?

Manana: We have all the documents; it costs $8,000.  We applied for financing from the Ministry of Health and the municipality, and we addressed you. We will be grateful for any donations from kind Georgians for my unfortunate grandson!

– Shalva, what are your expectations? What do you think will happen after the surgery?”

Shalva: Doctor assured me that I will be able to walk. Right now, I can barely move.  Grandma takes me to school. Mom works all day to keep us from starving. I have very good classmates at school, and they help me there. They take me by the hand and lead me. They even invite me to excursions and to birthday parties.  It means a lot to me that I am like this.  That I want to live and will fight to the end!

“So, this will be the result after the surgery… finally, Shalva will be able to stand on straightened legs.”

– Where would you go first when you learn to walk independently?

Shalva: For me, it’s so unfamiliar that I can’t even think about it yet. But if everything goes as the doctors promise, and I can move on my own, I’ll even come to your Fund and thank all the staff! I will tell everyone, I will shout about your kindness and ability to empathize!

‘Walking on straight legs is such an unattainable dream for me that I can’t even think about it!'”

Manana: We fought so much, came a long way, and now we can’t do anything.  Everything is ready for the surgery – we just need the money. And time is passing… and then it might be too late.”

Shalva: You know what I dream about? To become a programmer, to become successful and to prove to others that everything is possible in life, even if you were born different!

Dear friends! Your support and love are yielding their first fruits. Shalva, the little warrior, boldly strides forward towards his new future. Thanks to your generosity and care, he will become healthy. We are about to take the final important step that will lead us to healing.

Words from the Bible remind us,  “Everything is possible for one who believes” (Mark 9:23). As a community, we share faith in the miracle that will happen in Shalva’s life after the surgery. With your support, we are building a bridge to a new life for this much-suffered boy.

Remember that each of you plays a crucial role in this great cause. Your prayers, kind words, and financial assistance become powerful medicine for Shalva.

Today, we ask you once again to open your hearts and join the final stage of this journey. Let’s give Shalva the opportunity to experience the freedom of walking that we take for granted since birth.

Thank you for your love, for your faith, and for becoming a part of this exceptional moment. May blessings come to you in response to your generosity and kindness.

Tsiala (the mother): “Before the surgery, the doctor told me: ‘Keep in mind, I’m taking him in, and I will return him twice as tall as before.’ Seeing my son standing up straight is indescribable!”

For all of his 17 years, Shalva walked with bent legs due to cerebral palsy, leaning on his mother or grandmother’s hand. And for all those 17 years, he dreamed of standing up straight, walking on straight legs.

Walking was a torment for him! All Shalva dreamed of was to one day rise from his knees

Tsiala: “It’s a blessing that you gave my son a chance to live a full life! No matter how hard I worked, I could never have raised that amount.”

Manana( grandmother): My little man, my Shaliko! Look at what a handsome guy he is! My dear boy! How his eyes shine, my life! I lived to see the day when Shako stands tall! I always thought, let me live to see it, and then I can die. Don’t argue with me, I’m a sick woman; I’ve had eight surgeries, and both diabetes and blood pressure play cruel tricks on me. But I personally took care of my grandson for four months after the surgery. Four months without leaving the house: feeding him, giving him drinks, carrying the bedpan, turning him over. My Shakuna lay there for four months, two of them in a cast. He always needs me.

Manana (grandmother): “Look at how his eyes sparkle! My little man, my handsome boy!”

– Shalva, you should tell us about the surgery yourself. How did it go? How did you handle it?

Shalva: The “leg straightening” surgery was incredibly painful. They operated me on in February, in Yerevan. It lasted from 9 AM to 6 PM. You could say they took apart both my legs, piece by piece, and then rebuilt them correctly with the help of plates. My right leg was much more crooked than the left. (Shalva’s diagnosis is paraparesis of the lower limbs,  – editor.) Both my knees and feet were adjusted to a normal position. Oh, I even cried from the pain for the first two days.

Shalva: “The leg straightening surgery was very painful. The first two days were excruciating.  They even sedated me to help me cope.”

Manana: And I suffered along with him! I told him: “Endure it, bebo! Later, great joy awaits us!”

Shalva: Both my legs were cast for two months and I was told to lie down all the time. After two months, we went back to Yerevan, they removed the casts, and put on fixators. With those, I could sit. Another month passed, and the fixators were replaced with orthoses – with those, I could stand and start moving a little with the help of a walker. I was very anxious, what if I couldn’t stand up, what if I couldn’t walk? But I succeeded on the first try! “I can already walk 5-10 minutes with the walker,  I went to the yard by myself. I can’t wait to throw the walker away and just use a cane.

Shalva: “Two months on bed rest with my legs in casts. I was ready to endure anything just to live and walk normally!”

Tsiala: He was reborn thanks to you! He’s learning to walk again! Shalva when he stood up straight, it was the first time I saw my son so tall! It’s an indescribable feeling! I look at this miracle and realize that I couldn’t have given him such a chance, no matter how hard I worked, even if I worked myself to exhaustion. How wonderful that you gave him this chance! What happiness and luck, dear Lord, that my acquaintance, also a parent of a child with health problems, told me about the Chernovetskyi Fund. Both Shalva’s grandmother and I bless you and embrace you! May our boundless joy be passed on to you! May it accompany you throughout your life!

Shalva: “I can already walk 5-10 minutes with the walker, and I can’t wait to throw the walker away.”

– Shalva, what did you feel when you saw yourself in the mirror looking so different?

Shalva: Everything is new, unusual, and joyful for me now. I’ve grown so much – I am taller than my mother and grandmother! Thank you for all the changes in my life.  I now have great motivation and high hopes. Soon, I will reach my ultimate dream – to walk on my own! So many people want this along with me. Thank you to the friends of the Fund who cared so much and rooted for me! I am trying my best.

Shalva: “All of Georgia wanted me to walk on my own. Soon, I will reach my ultimate dream!”

– Shalva, how long will the recovery approximately take?

Shalva: It’s different for everyone. It depends on how my body responds. I can help it by doing exercises. My mom submitted a request to the Ministry of Health; I am entitled to a free rehabilitation course.

Manana: If only everyone cared about people like your Fund does. I see how much concern there is for my grandson, how much attention to my Shako both before and after the surgery. This is because you are kind and warm-hearted people. You’ve done a great deed.  Our other problems are minor.  We will manage on our own. He suffered so much, his knees bending to the ground, but you gave him a chance for a different future with this surgery. Our family’s prayers are always with you now!
