There was a time when Onise worked, cared for his sick mother, and lived an ordinary life.

Today, he is 51 years old. He lives in a shack that he built with his own hands from scraps of wood and pieces of metal found at a landfill.

No electricity. No gas. No running water.

For three years, Onise cared for his seriously ill mother, selling everything he owned to provide for her. When his mother passed away, he lost not only her, but also his home.

All that remained were debts, a tent, and the street.

Men cry too. Especially when they lose their loved ones, their home, and their hope for tomorrow. 

After suffering severe hypothermia, Onise developed a serious urinary condition and other health complications. He is unable to work, lives with constant pain, and has no money for medical examinations or treatment. 

Then came this shack. His last refuge.

But now even this shelter may be taken away. The fear of losing it keeps him awake at night. According to Onise, the area near the Tbilisi Sea is scheduled for redevelopment next year. 

“I have nowhere to go. Absolutely nowhere,” – he says, and for the first time during our conversation, he cannot hold back his tears.

Onise, 51: “Please help me, even with just one lari. There was a time when I helped others. I still believe that kindness always comes back to us. Perhaps one day you’ll see me on the street and say, ‘That’s the man I once helped get back on his feet.’

Most remarkable of all, even now he shares what little he has. Near his shack lives a group of stray puppies that he feeds, even though he himself often goes to bed hungry.

Friends, let’s not allow this man to end up on the street.

Sometimes a single lari can do more than we could ever imagine.

Today, Onise is not asking for wealth.

He is asking only for the chance to remain a human being and live with dignity.
