There is no greater grief for a loving mother than to lose her own child – the one for whom she would give her own life without hesitation. This is exactly what happened to Tamara Papava from Tbilisi, and now the inconsolable mother sheds tear over her boy’s grave. But misfortune never comes alone…

A few days later, her second son fell ill with fatal meningitis. 

You know, friends, that Georgian mothers themselves seem to stand on the brink of life and death when misfortune befalls their children. Now grief can kill Tamara. If we do not help her in these difficult hours, she will leave us in terrible agony and worry for her second son, who is ill with meningitis – a disease with an unbearable headache that kills people…

Tamara stands by a fresh grave. Her son is under this hill. She has just buried the one she has been protecting since the first minute of his life. The boy who would never be able to live like everyone else, but who has always been the most precious to her.

Tamara Papava cries the way only those who have had their heart torn out alive can. Each sob is like a blow to the chest. This is not just a frame. These are not just tears. This is a cry that cannot be silenced: “Why? For what? Why my child?”

Tamara is 64 years old. She has carried her cross all her life, but now her strength is running out. Fifteen years ago, she buried her husband. Since then, she has been left alone with two sons, who have had severe brain problems since birth. Despite poverty and illness, she did not give up. Feeding, treating, clothing, and protecting her sons was her daily mission. She never complained. But this year, tragedy struck twice…

Her eldest son, 30-year-old George, was diagnosed with meningitis of the brain.

Treatment at the Tbilisi hospital is currently being paid for by the state.

The youngest son, 29-year-old Goga, was always close to his mother. But on January 7, a nightmare happened: on the subway on the way home, the poor guy’s eyes darkened from hunger, his head started spinning, and he lost his balance.

The guy fell from the subway platform right onto the tracks. He was taken to the hospital with multiple injuries and was discharged home two weeks later. But he never got back on his feet.

On August 7, Tamara buried her youngest son…

Tamara: “I put my son in the ground, and I stayed here… I was always sure that my sons would bury me. But it turned out that I buried my beloved child.”

Their home is two rooms in an old house without electricity or gas due to a debt of 500 lari. No gas stove, no refrigerator, no appliances – nothing. 

The family’s entire income is Tamara’s old-age pension (395 lari), her son’s disability pension (180 lari) and social assistance (180 lari). This is barely enough for bread and medicine.

Tamara does not ask for the impossible. She needs a washing machine, a refrigerator, a gas stove, some furniture and food. But the most important thing is a chance for George to live, while she can still take care of him. The strength is leaving this sufferer. 

“I’ve already lost one son… I won’t survive losing a second one. Help us so that I can just wash his clothes, store food, cook dinner. So that he lives, and not just lives out his days…”, Tamara asks.

We won’t be able to return Tamara’s husband and youngest son. But we can make sure that she doesn’t lose her last loved one. The poor mother is now a living dead person. If the treacherous life takes away her second son, it will be worse for her than death. Some people will probably think now: what could be worse than death? No one will understand this except the mother who buried her child. 

What she needs most is to know that there are people left in this world who are ready to support her in the darkest moment of her life. We can be that support for her. Give a chance to a woman who has lost one son and is fighting for the life of another, to live again in warmth, with food on the table and hope in her heart.

No parent should have to bury their child… But Tamara had to face this abyss alone. Now all her love and strength are directed to giving her eldest son a longer and brighter life.

We often think that trouble comes to others. But while we think that it is somewhere far away, it is already knocking at our door. Such a tragedy can happen to anyone. That is why today we are either next to Tamara, or part of the cold crowd, indifferently passing by. We will not be able to bring back her loved ones, but we can be next to her when each new day seems harder for her than the previous one.
