11-year-old George hears the world as if there is a cracked glass between him and life. But there is a chance to break this wall of silence

Imagine hearing the world as if through cracked glass. Sounds reach you distorted, fragmented, as if someone is constantly turning the volume up and down. You can’t make out words, you lose half the meaning, and the faces around you seem distant and alien.

The child tries to see in the mirror the George he dreams of being, but… He holds back the tears that well up in his eyes, but he can do nothing about the pain in his heart.

Handsome George can barely hear!!! Imagine what the child experiences when he talks to his classmates! Horror! It would be good if the doctors who tortured him with the operation understood this! His mother’s voice is like a whisper from another room for him. The laughter of his little sister Mariam is like the ringing of a bell in the fog.

His mother, 35-year-old Shorena, is raising her children alone. Her ex-husband left the family long ago and does not help. Her entire existence is a struggle to feed her children and give them at least a shadow of a normal childhood.

The family lives on a social pension and modest help from her grandmother, who sometimes sends food from the village. Sometimes in the evening Shorena counts her last pennies, wondering: will there be enough for bread and milk tomorrow?

And a new disaster lies ahead – 6,000 lari for George’s operation. For a family that is barely surviving, this amount is an insurmountable mountain. At the same time, another expectation sounds in their home.

This year Mariam is due to start first grade. For any family, this is a holiday – a school bag, a beautiful uniform, bouquets of flowers and happy photos. But for the Davitaia family, September is not a holiday, but a test.

Mom has no money for a backpack, or notebooks, or even pencils. Mariam dreams of school, asks if they will buy her flowers for the first bell… And Shorena’s heart sinks: how to explain to a six-year-old girl that her mother cannot give her what other children get without effort?

Meanwhile, George looks at his sister and smiles. He sees her joy, but he doesn’t hear her first words, her childish laughter, the way he should. After the first operation, his hearing improved a little, but without the second, he will never be able to hear this world clearly.

“My greatest wish,” says Shorena, “is for my son to truly hear my voice. For him to understand every word, and not just guess from my lips. For him to hear his sister’s laughter when she reads the first letters in her book. For him to have a childhood – a real one.”

Today we have a chance to give George this miracle. A chance to hear his mother’s voice, his sister’s first school poems, the sounds without which a happy childhood is impossible.

Let’s not leave the Davitaia family alone with their troubles. Together we can destroy the silence that surrounds this boy!
