“I buried my husband… And there will be no one to bury me… Please, don’t leave me alone…” – 70-year-old Svetlana lives in a dilapidated house with a leaking roof. Every day she saves on everything – on medication, on food – just to make it to the next day. And there is no one to help her but us.

70-year-old grandmother Svetlana met a foundation’s correspondent soaked to the skin, trembling from the cold. Inside her house, it was raining just like outside.

Svetlana Goridko, 70: “Our house is in a collapsing state.  I’m afraid the roof might fall in while I’m asleep. I’m very scared…”

The roof leaks, but Svetlana keeps going – placing buckets and basins to keep the water from flooding the house.

The ceiling is covered in stains.

The floor is rotten, patched together from different pieces of wood. Grandma Sveta is afraid of stumbling.

It’s getting harder and harder for her to walk. She suffers from severe knee pain; there’s a cyst under one knee, and she needs surgery. At night she barely sleeps – the unbearable pain gives her no rest. The doctor prescribed medication costing 200 lari. But how can she afford it when she survives on a small pension and a 40-lari allowance?

X-rays show that her joints are almost worn away, her bones thin and fragile.

“Give us this day our daily bread.”

Every day Svetlana saves on everything – even on food. She goes to a free canteen, takes bread, and tries to make it last all day.

Once, her life was completely different. She studied at the Polytechnic University in Leningrad, fell in love with a fellow student – a Georgian – and married him. That’s how she found herself in Tbilisi, which she came to love with all her heart.

Her mother never accepted her choice and left her only daughter out of the will. But Svetlana never regretted it.

Svetlana Goridko, 70: “Love knows no borders! I had a good, kind husband — we loved each other very much.”

When her husband was diagnosed with a brain tumor, she did not leave him. She fought for him for 16 years. She sold her apartment. She gave everything. For four years he was bedridden – and she was by his side every day.

She prolonged his life. But broke her own. In 2019, he passed away. And since then, she has been alone. Completely alone. Her daughter lives in another country. With two children to care for, she simply can’t support her mother.

Grandma Sveta does not complain. But her life is very hard.

Friends, this kind elderly Ukrainian woman – who devoted everything she had to prolong her Georgian husband’s life during his long struggle with a brain tumor – desperately needs our help:

• to repair her bathroom so she can wash properly at least once in her life;
• to fix the leaking roof;
• to buy food;
• to purchase medications;
• to provide her with clothing.
