Which death is better? From the cold? From disease? Or from roof collapsing on your head!? God forbid anyone to face such a choice! “While it was warm, we slept outdoors. We were afraid that the roof of our dilapidated house would collapse on our heads. But it already got cold – now it’s impossible to stay outside at night. It doesn’t matter what will kill us – the cold or this house. During the wind, it shakes and makes strange sounds. It won’t survive this winter. And we won’t be able to stand it – we’ll die from the cold.” – 83-year-old grandmother Liunina wipes away the tears from her eyes. Then, leaning with her wrinkled hand on a stick carved from wood, she hardly leads us to the house. “We huddle in one room. We don’t have firewood or food for winter. My old age is bitter, it is so bitter… Although there is nothing sweet in this country for people like me. Only death…”

“The house is rotting from below and crumbling from above. It won’t survive this winter.”
Which death is better? From the cold? From disease? Or from roof collapsing on your head!?God forbid anyone to face such a choice!

“An early death is better than such a bitter old age”

Liunina Konjaria lives in absolutely unbearable conditions with her daughter and her only grandson, who suffers from mental retardation. The family is socially disadvantaged. It is hard for Liunina’s daughter Mzevinar to take care of her sick son and elderly mother and support them. She is both a man and a woman at home. She can work in the field, but this is a seasonal part-time job, and they pay a little for it. Even if she mows down all the fields in the village, she still won’t be able to earn enough money to buy food, medications, and fix the house.

“Probably no one lives in such conditions anywhere else.”

– Mzevinar, could you please tell our readers about yourself? What made you address us? What problems you have? How are you doing?
Mzevinar (50-year-old): We live in terrible conditions. We are having a very hard time. The house is falling apart. We go to bed at night dressed – we are afraid. If the roof starts to make noise, we’ll have time to escape before it collapses.

“Our neighbors gave us this old sofa.” Everything you see in our house – all the things – were given to us by others”

“The house is rotting from below and crumbling from above. It won’t survive this winter.”

I am very tired… Every next day is worse than the previous one. I never had a good life. I spent all my youth in misery. I did not marry for love – as they had always done in the last century. My husband and mother-in-law treated me very badly – they did not give me food. I was not even allowed to pick fruit in the yard. They beat me when I was pregnant. The fact that Beka was born like this is the result of these beatings.
– Did your mother-in-law beat you too?
Mzevinar: Once she told her relatives: “I will throw this sick child out of the window and accuse Mzevinar that she killed her son.” Beka was a baby then. I packed and left. Since then, I no longer communicated with the family of my ex-husband. Since that day I have been living with my mother.

“In addition to mental retardation, Beka suffers from a nervous breakdown, he constantly needs medication …”

– Please tell us more about Beka’s condition.
Mzevinar: He has mental retardation. I always accompanied him to school – he couldn’t walk alone. He was unable to learn anything, but I tried to make him learn at least the alphabet. That’s how his father and grandmother ruined his life forever. Beka often suffers from a headache, his blood pressure drops, and his mood changes. He becomes aggressive. He must take medication regularly. But only one medication is funded, and I have to buy the rest by myself. And we cannot afford that. Mom needs medications too.
Liunina: My feet get swollen, dear. I have a high blood pressure. I have kidney stones and sometimes I feel so bad. But how can I think about myself?! I’m worried about my child. I helped Matsatso (Mzevinar) as long as I could, but now I can’t do anything, I’m a burden for her. I will die soon, and there is not even a place at home where they could put me to give me the last send-off.

“We – Georgian old people – are the most unfortunate old people!”

– You must live for a long time, stop thinking about death.
Liunina: At my age, a person thinks only about death, especially when he wants to get rid of bitter old age and poverty. Well, what kind of life is it when you dream about food and barely survive from debt to debt?!  When you can’t even pay your debts in the store with your pension and you are almost hungry?! Look at this house – is this a human dwelling? Probably, we, Georgian old people, are the most unfortunate old people! You have to survive on miserable pennies, like beggar. If something hurts you – that’s the end!
– In addition to your pension, what other income does your family have?
Mzevinar: Beka’s disability pension is 200 lari, social allowance is 50 lari, but only Beka and my mother get it. They don’t give it to me. To this day, I can’t figure out why. Officials receive thousands, steal tens of thousands, and they don’t fork out even 50 lari for a poor woman like me.
– Do your relatives help you?
Liunina: Do they have anything to help us? I have another daughter. She lives in Gali. Her husband is sick. Their house was burned down three times. This is a conflict zone, and it’s hard to live there. She is having a very hard time now. But who cares? I am very worried about my children. Every day I mourn my unhappy life.
– Did the local authorities take any interest in your situation?
Mzevinar: Two years ago, they helped us halfway: they gave us building blocks for this small extension. But we could not put a roof, and the help remained useless.

“We could live in this little room if we could complete it.”

– What is your main problem you want to solve the most?
Liunina: I do not want anything. I would starve, just to take the child to the doctor, buy medication to calm him down.
It would be nice to fix this roof or strengthen the house so that we could sleep like humans at night. I dream of peace, my dear ones. The Lord and you are my last hope. I believe you will take my prayer to heart as if I were your grandmother and help me.
