Two-year-old Gabriel has a bomb in his mouth! Nobody knows when it will “explode.” The boy has a rare condition – a cleft palate – and he could even die from swallowing water. Urgent surgery is needed!

calendar October 5, 2023

A mere sip of water could prove fatal for two-year-old Gabriel. His soft palate didn’t develop properly, and he can’t cry due to a congenital heart defect. For the past two years, he’s been living on the edge. No one knows when or why this ticking time bomb will go off. He can’t be left unattended for even a moment! He might choke on his own tears while crying or even lose consciousness. God, please spare any mother from experiencing such a trial.

“Everyone must carry Gabriel in their arms… he has a heart defect and a cleft palate”

Barbare (10-year-old): When he starts crying, it’s hard for us to concentrate on anything else! And he bites like a little wolf!  Abram taught him that it’s okay to bite his sisters, but we tolerate it as long as he stays healthy!

Abram (5 years old): Yes!  Yeah, I taught him that. Because they scold me, but we can’t scold Gabi!

If the operation is not done urgently, even one sip of water could go into the wrong throat and kill the child

Megi (8-year-old): And Gabriel snores at night! We all sleep together in one bed, and he’s the loudest snorer!

Sonia (7-year-old): And he fidgets… sometimes he’ll kick with his foot or push with his hand! But we can’t say anything to him. He starts crying immediately and complains to Mom! He can’t cry, you know.

Five children sleep in these beds! Together!!!

– But do you know why can’t he cry?

Barbare: He doesn’t have that little thing in his throat that we have, and all the food he eats can go into his lungs. Even tears can “strangle” him. You know how? He cries and cries, and then turns blue, can’t breathe… that means he “choked,” and Mom or Grandma save him… and we’re scared. And he has a sick heart… it’s either big or small – but not like ours. That’s why he’s allowed to do anything.

Sonia: Yes! He is allowed even to bite! And Abram, our older brother… well, not really older – he’s 5 years old, Abram tells him to go to the girls and bite them.  And he’s happy when we scream…

“It’s so much fun to torment girls”

Megi: Don’t think that we’re crazy kids; we’re perfectly normal and very good. We help Mom. I can even cook porridge.

Sonia: And I can fry eggs. And I’m the best at it! I wake up earlier than anyone else in the morning and sweep the house.

– Why do you sleep on one bed?

Megi: Because we’re poor. We don’t have a lot of things. For example, I don’t have markers, but I love drawing.

Nazibrola (grandmother): Oh, they’ll talk your ears off. They’re so funny! They may lack so many things, but they haven’t become bitter. I thank the Lord that they’re all healthy, but Gabriel is our worry. We’re really concerned about him. We were told he needed surgery when he turned one and a half, but now he’s two, and we still haven’t been able to take him to the doctor. We don’t have anything of our own – just the clothes on our backs, that’s it!

“There are many of us, but the most restless one is Abram. He always interferes with us girls in everything”

– Is this house not yours?

Nazibrola: This is our relative’s house who let us stay for a while. Our own house burned down back in 1994, and with the help of kind people, we managed to build a small house nearby. We lived there, but in 2013, it was destroyed by a landslide. I reached out to everyone, wrote letters to all the authorities, but we were never resettled… it’s so embarrassing to stay in someone else’s house. People want to return to their own home, but we can’t vacate it… where can we go with little children? We can’t afford to pay rent; sometimes we don’t even have enough for food. And the child needs surgery. Every day is a test of fate. Even when he drinks water, I say a prayer that he won’t choke.

“When I grow up, I want to become a math teacher, and I’ll teach everyone”

– What do the doctors say?

Nazibrola: They say he needs surgery urgently! But they don’t tell us where to find the money. The boy not only has a problem with his palate, but he also has a congenital heart defect. That’s why the girls said he’s very cranky and gets away with everything. We can’t have him crying and worrying.

“Wait, don’t run, you can’t!”

Sonia: I didn’t say that!  I said he’s a meanie who bites!  But still, he’s a very good boy.

– Who among the children is the most obedient?

Megi: Me!

Sonia: Me!

Abram: NOT ME!!!

– And who is the best at studying?

Megi and Sonia (in unison): Barbare!!!

Barbare: I really love to study, I love science, and conducting various experiments. For example, if you put white flowers in colored water, they will turn the same color as the water!  Don’t believe me? Go home and try it! Then call me and tell me about it!

“I dream of my brothers having bicycles, so they won’t disturb me while I’m reading!”

Megi: I love studying too, and I want to become a math teacher when I grow up!

– What do math teachers do?

Megi: Well, they teach kids and are really good at counting. Ask me what 8+8 is.

– How much is 8+8?

Megi: Umm, 19! Oh, no, no… it’s 16. Well, sometimes you can make mistakes! I’m still little, you know! I don’t even have a boyfriend.

– Does any of you have one?

Sonia: None of us do! Not me, especially! I’ll never get married in my life! I can’t leave my grandmother, you know. Do you know what she calls me? Her little tail! Do you know why? Because I follow her around like a tail all the time. When she gets very old, I’ll even cook and feed her!

“Sonia – grandma’s little tail”

Nazibrola: My dear ones, they are so wonderful, and it’s heartbreaking that we can’t give them anything but love. My son is working in Tbilisi to support children. He works two shifts to provide for them. In our times, being a large family is very challenging. But when God gives you many children, you don’t have the right to get rid of them.  And look at how good they all are. My daughter-in-law takes care of the children and the household. Our only income is social allowance, but it barely covers utility bills and the most basic food.

“I miss my father every day. And I want to hug him”

Abram: I miss my dad a lot.  He comes sometimes. And I keep counting the days. I sleep and wake up, sleep and wake up, and Dad will come!

Nazibrola: Children miss him so much. But he has to work far from home just to earn a piece of bread. You know, we have 5 children to feed and clothe. The local authorities don’t provide any help to large families at all. That’s why we turned to you for help with Gabriel’s surgery. One more thing – children need beds.

Megi: We need a bunk bed!  So that everyone can fit. And I really, really need markers, pencils, and paints.

Barbare: I’d like some paints too. And bicycles for my brothers. Maybe then they’ll calm down, ride them, and stop bothering us.

Sonia: I really want a tablet. My sisters say it will hurt my eyes, but I won’t use it much, and only for good things.

Abram: I don’t even know what I want. Maybe toys… no! Lots of toys and a ball!

The story of the Sordia family will not leave indifferent those whose hearts have been touched by God. You saved our little brother, and now we sing and play the panduri!

REPOST RIGHT AWAY, MY GOOD MAN! HELP YOUR FRIENDS TO GET CLOSER  TO THE WORK OF MERCY!

Due to a cleft soft palate, Gabriel was in mortal danger.  But now his life is saved.

“My brother Gabo had his soft palate repaired,” reports Megi. – “He was born with a torn one.” – “A cleft,” Grandma Nazibrola corrects.

Here’s what the soft palate looked like before the operation.  Gabriel could have been killed by any swallowed piece of food, sip of water, or even by his crying!

The cleft is no longer there; it has been sewn up

“Now everything there is sewn with threads, he showed it to us,” Megi continues. “And he will be a regular kid. He’ll be able to cry, swallow food… We are so happy, all of us sing: I, Barbara, and Sonia. And we play the panduri that you gave us. And everyone at home is happy, mom sings along, grandmother, little brother Abram.  But we’re not making a big concert at home yet. Gabo also wants to sing, but he can’t yet.”

Megi (8-years-old): Gabo’s stitches will dissolve on their own, they don’t need to be removed, that’s what the doctor said.

– What else did the doctor say? Maybe he put Gabo on a diet?

Megi: He said it will take a month to heal. We have to give him porridge. And put all food in a blender and give it only that way. Yogurt is okay, but no chewy foods. So that Gabo doesn’t resent us and can tolerate it, we eat some food secretly from him.

Barbare (10-year-old): Also, Gabo can’t catch a cold, because his body is weak now.

Sonia (7-year-old): And I know that Gabo was put to sleep for an hour and a half for the operation.  No wonder! It’s probably so scary! Good thing he didn’t see it. Mom and dad took him to Tbilisi.

Sonia: They took Gabo for surgery in Tbilisi, and they sewed his palate there.  It’s good that he was asleep. It’s probably very scary

Nazibrola (grandmother): We would not have taken him anywhere if the Chernovetskyi Fund had not paid for the operation. We tried to raise the necessary amount among relatives and acquaintances by ourselves, but it didn’t work out. So, accept our immense thanks, which is born not on our lips, but in the heart itself. As a grandmother of five grandchildren, whom you helped so much, I am endlessly happy now. What is the meaning of my life? It is in these children.  Look how they rejoice, how they chirp!  You saved my youngest grandson from death. Any crying, vomiting during a cold, improperly swallowed piece could have been his last.  Because of this damned cleft. We were so scared!

Gabo wants to sing, like his sisters, but he is not allowed to yet. Everyone at home makes sure he doesn’t suddenly sing or eat solid food

You gave the children a bed, a tablet, a bicycle, a panduri… You care about their well-being, their development. I have lived on this earth and with my heart I feel good people! Your help is selfless! It’s the way you help us and others.

Megi: We swap floors, it’s more interesting that way.  And we visit each other to lie down, side by side, and chat.

– And we truly cherish our time spent with such wonderful grandmothers like you! And of course, we are happy to support both the talents of the children and Georgian family traditions. Who plays the panduri?

Barbare: I asked you for the panduri, I play a little. And Sonia too. In general, the three of us sing: I, Megi, and Sonia. We attended a music circle. Now we can’t afford it. Sonia has the first voice, I have the second, and Megi has the third. We sing everything folk: “Bakhtrioni,” “Song graces the feast” and others.  Our whole family sings well. When dad comes from Tbilisi, he also joins in. And grandma films us and then posts it on Facebook. Show it on the tablet, Sonia.

Barbare:  “Our whole family sings well. Now we will prepare new pieces with the panduri for our home concert.”

Sonia: I am watching cartoons.

Barbare: Sonja gives us the tablet just a little bit at a time, because she’s the owner. Oh… I don’t mind lending the panduri, and Abram doesn’t mind lending the bike, and Megi gives us paints, and she gave us an album… Sonia, what’s wrong with you!

“It’s my tablet!  I thought to order it.”

Abram doesn’t bite anymore, just so you know. When he turned 6, he stopped biting! Well, and he needs help with riding. We hold and ride him, the bike is a little too big for him.

“If I don’t share the bike, my sisters won’t ride me.”

But it’s perfect for me. I just need to remember which pedal is the brake. I’m confusing them right now. Megi is the one who likes to ride the bike the most, every minute. Well, it’s okay, it’s our bike now, we’ll all get a turn to ride it.

Megi: And we share a bunk bed. You can change floors without being naughty. Only Sonka is stingy with the tablet.

Sonia: I’m the one who thought of asking for it, no one else did.

When Sonia went away, the tablet was left unattended…

– Kids, who’s drawing?

Megi: I ordered you all sorts of stationery: paints, albums, markers… I draw regular girls and dolls. I can’t draw my sisters and brothers yet, they don’t turn out looking like them.

Barbare: All the gifts are great! We are most happy that our Gabo got that thing – the soft palate – sewn up. Thanks to everyone!

Barbare: “Megi let me draw…”

– Nazibrola, is there a chance that your living conditions will change? Has our project had any effect on those who make decisions?

Nazibrola: I’m so angry with the social services workers. They came, looked around, and concluded: “The children have wonderful conditions. What are you complaining about?”

These people are frankly indifferent. They don’t care that this is our relative’s house, and we are here temporarily, and we ourselves have nothing. Our relatives can’t wait to vacate the house so they can start repairs here…

There is no hope that the mayor, the district council…will help us with housing. 100 lari for a large family for the New Year – that’s their entire help…

– What help would you like to receive from the readers of the Fund?

Nazibrola: We have received everything. The readers have done so much for us! I feel awkward. I will only ask for an electric heater, if possible. You have helped us a lot! How can I talk about problems again? We are very happy and grateful!

How many wonderful, talented, beautiful, intelligent children there are in Georgia, but at the same time suffering from hard life… You helped the large family of Sordia to save two-year-old baby Gabo. The child’s grandmother and parents, sisters and brother bless and thank you!

We remind you that this family has gifted children, and any contribution to their promotion and development will be a great joy for us!

If you have a heavy heart because of everyday problems or unresolved issues, as a distraction just see our posts on Facebook, or better call any of our beneficiaries, and all your problems will seem unimportant to you, compared with the problems of those to whom you helped in the most difficult moment of their lives.

Our problems are nothing if compared… Here are true misfortunes, in front of your eyes! Just thank the Lord for what you have. You are the happiest person in the world! Remember this and help those in need.

Unfortunately, problems of this and other families do not end here and now… Therefore, from time to time, look through the stories of unhappy people on our website, talk to them. Every time you dial the Phone of an unhappy person, God is blessing you! For sure! Go on helping these families! This is the best service to the Lord!
