The roof of their house is overgrown with moss, there are cracks in the walls, and the cracks are so huge that the boogeyman can get through them and scare the kids. “When the wind blows, he whistles from there like this: “Fuuu-fuuu”. Mom says if we don’t behave well, he will take us away,” – five-year-old Barbara says and points to the cracks in the wall. She and her seven-year-old brother Papuna try to be good children, they do not cry when their mother cannot give them food. But little Elene, who will soon turn two years old, cries all the time… The children are afraid because of that: what if the boogeyman does not make out who was crying, and will take them all? What will mom do then? What will they do without her?

REPOST RIGHT AWAY, MY GOOD MAN! HELP YOUR FRIENDS TO GET CLOSER TO THE WORK OF MERCY!

“Baby, don’t cry! Good people will help you smile, and this will be the greatest reward for them!”

“The roof of the house is overgrown with moss, there are cracks in the walls, and they are so huge that the boogeyman can get through them and scare the kids.”

“They cover the walls with old, shabby blankets so that children do not freeze in winter”

Nino meets us at the entrance and apologizes for the mess in her house. They have no wardrobes, no proper furniture, there is even nowhere to sit. The floor here is concrete, and the plank walls are covered with paper – probably from the communists’ times. This is not a house, but a den of robbers. Clothes, packed in plastic bags, lie on the floor, dishes are laid out on some boards. One can only guess where the kitchen is, where the bathroom is, and where is the bedroom.

“Children walk on this floor. And when there is nothing to heat the room in winter, mom simply does not let them out of their beds, wrapping them tightly in blankets.”

– Nino, how did you find yourself here?

Nino: Yes, I understand that it surprises you – this place does not look like a house where children can live. This is my parents’ house. It has not been renovated for a long time and fell into decline. My parents are sick. We have always lived in poverty, but not like beggars. When I met my future husband, I was 19 years old, and he was 33. I thought I would live as safely as behind a stone wall; I thought we would have a happy family, and our life would be like a fairy tale. You know, girls always dream about it.

– When did you realize that this fairy tale was not destined to come true?

Nino: Unfortunately, I realized it very soon. He was always calm, but when he got drunk, he crashed everything around. He even raised his hand to his parents, to his grandmother, to me. They tried to protect me from him, but he got even angrier. Over time, he started to drink more. When his parents died, I took over all his anger and blows. When he started raising his hand against Papuna, and I could not protect him, I realized it made no sense to keep such a family.

“I will never hit my mother and sister. And I won’t beat other girls either.”

  – So, you came to your parents’ place.

Nino: Yes. I left him over a year ago. I thought that my parents would not accept me, they have enough problems of their own. They barely made ends meet, they lived on dad’s pension, and then there’s me with my children… Elena was only three months old. You have to keep your children but how to survive on one pension only? At least there was a roof over our heads, no one beat us or yelled in the middle of the night, and this gave me strength to live on. We had to struggle a lot to get entitled to the social allowance. Now we at least buy flour for future use. And the neighbors here are very kind. Today they brought half a chicken to my children, and they almost got into a fight over it. They haven’t eaten such a yummy for a long time.

Papuna (7-year-old): You know how unfair the girls are? Barbare ate her piece and now she wants to take mine. And I won’t give it to her. I also want a chicken. It happens all the time.

Barbare (5-year-old): Did you give me your candy? Do you remember? Do you think I forgot it? Someone gave him a candy, and he ate it all alone. He forgot he had a sister.

 – Do you share everything with your brother?

Barbare: He does not like it! If I had a pipia (car), I would share it with him. But no chocolate! Do you know what I want? So that everything around was made form chocolate – trees, and a chair, and all the food was made from chocolate.

– Then you would certainly share chocolate with your brother, right?

“I want everything around to be made from chocolate! Trees, and a chair, and all the food was made from chocolate.”

Barbare: No! He offended me! I will not share anything with him.

– How did he make you get so angry?

Barbare: He didn’t give me his chicken… But I love chicken more than he does. And he is greedy!

Papuna: Here you see!!! She behaves so dishonestly!

“No matter how much we quarreled over sweets, I still love her. She’s little.”

– I think you’re arguing for fun. Which one of you is the naughtiest? Who offends mom?

Papuna and Barbara responded in one voice: Elene!!! She cries all the time!

“Elene always cries of hunger”

 – Nino, is it true? Maybe something bothers her?

Nino: She cries of hunger or cold. She wants me to hold her in my arms all the time. I can’t devote much time to my elder children because of her, and they get jealous.

“Children should not live like homeless people. They have the right to have a childhood.”

 – So, your main problem is hunger?

Nino: Yes! The only thing I would like to ask is food. Flour, cereals. What else doesn’t go bad for a long time? Oil, canned food. So that I would have no fear of running out of food for my children. You see, they fought over one chicken wing. Is it normal? What about candy? I have to cut it using ruler. God forbid if someone gets a smaller piece. Children shouldn’t live like this. They have the right to have a childhood.

 – What about other dreams?

Nino: You have no idea how it feels when your three little children are hungry all the time and ask you: “Mom, bake at least some bread. Mom, give me just a little crust…” – But mom has neither flour nor stale bread. This is real hell on earth! And I really have one dream! I want my kids to never fight over food…

Papuna: What a good dream! This means we should have as much of a delicious food so that we don’t have to quarrel over it! And it should never end!

***

Nino Kvaratskhelia -the mother of three – has a hard life. She was left alone with three children in her arms. The meager social allowance is not enough even to provide the children with the most basic things. Her children – Elene, Barbara and Papuna – live in a creepy, musty, rotten shack, they sleep in the beds that are falling apart and are constantly malnourished. They have no clothes, no footwear. Friends, should Georgian children grow up in such conditions?

They really need our support. They will be grateful for any help: food, diapers, clothes, and footwear. They don’t even have basic appliances – a washing machine, a refrigerator. Kids need a tablet to study.

You can visit them and provide them all possible help at: Zugdidi Minicipality, village Darcheli.
