For the second day now, little Barbara has been crying of cold and hunger. The gas in the cylinder has run out, but they cannot turn on the electric stove – the electricity bill will increase greatly, and they can’t pay for it. There is no money left for food. They get allowance once a month, but it is barely enough for a week. How can the 250 GEL be enough for four people, when you still have to pay 100 GEL for rent?
Is there any answer to that? I went over the numbers in my mind and did not understand how you can survive on this money. But the four of them, including two-year-old Barbara, who does not understand how to endure hunger and cold at all, somehow manage to live on 5 lari a day.

And now Barbara clings with one hand to the apple that a neighbor gave her, and with the other hand to her mother, to somehow warm up.
Our neighbor treated her to pasta yesterday, gave us one plate, but little Barbara could not eat it. Cold food was hard to swallow.
Sleeping on the floor in the bitter cold is just life-threatening
– Diana, let’s get to know each other.
Diana: I’m Diana, I’m 46 years old. I live in this room with my children – 18-year-old Rusa and 16-year-old Giorgi. And this charming crybaby is my granddaughter, she is 2 years old.
– Do you have any grown children?
Diana: No! I understand your surprise, but Barbara is Rusa’s daughter.
– She is still a child!
Diana: When she was 14, she was kidnapped. I couldn’t do anything – you know what customs we have in the villages …
Rusa: I was so young and inexperienced. I was so afraid of everything. I thought that if I left the family, people would condemn me, that if I didn’t stay, I would have the name of a vicious woman… Now I understand that I endured it all in vain.
– Did you know your husband before he kidnapped you?
Rusa: Yes, I saw him from afar for a couple of times, he was an acquaintance of my girl-friend. He was seven years older than me. But God knows, I didn’t want to get married. I was in the 9th grade, I wanted to finish school and become a dressmaker. I’m still dreaming about that…
An 18-year-old girl has a two-year-old daughter. If it weren’t for her mom, it would be more like playing house.
– How did it happen?
Rusa: When I was walking down the street, a car stopped, and my future husband and his father were sitting in it. He said that we needed to talk about something. I refused to, and they forced me into the car and took me somewhere. They said that’s it, I’m no longer my mother’s daughter, but the wife of this man. Then Barbara was born. I did not know how to take care of a child – I was still a child myself. Then my second daughter was born, but she soon died. At the age of 16, I already knew the bitterness of being both an unfortunate wife and an unhappy mother. I realized that I could not stand that for so long, that both my daughter and I were doomed to death in this family. I didn’t care anymore what people would say, how they would call me names, and I left. I came back to my mother. I feel safe with my mom, she does everything possible for us.
– What are you sad about, Rusa?
Rusa: I regret that I did not run back to my mom the same day I was kidnapped. I regret that I endured that for so long, that I could not study, that I ruined my life.
– You are only 18 years old, dear, you have your whole life ahead of you… Life has taught you a lesson, you have become strong! Now, for the sake of your daughter, you must change yourself and the world around you! Where would you start from? Do you have a dream?
Rusa: Yes! Since childhood, I dreamed of becoming a dressmaker. I wanted to finish school and enter the dress-making courses. I wanted to sew beautiful dresses for myself and my mother. We never had those. I even once dared and sewed one dress. My friend liked it so much that I gave it to her.
“Dolly-Barbara is the only bright spot in my life”
– What do you need to make your dream come true?
Rusa: You know, we have such a period in life now that we can’t even dream. Frozen Barbara cries and asks to be held to somehow warm herself. What can you think about when there is nothing to eat? When mom cleans yards or apartments from morning till night to earn a living somehow. What dreams are we talking about?
– How did you imagine your life?
Rusa: Definitely not like this one. I wanted to study. I really wanted to. I knew it was the only gleam to me! I knew that you should start a family only for great love. I knew that you should give birth to children when you can provide for them. But things didn’t go the way I thought.
This gas cylinder, which costs 20 lari to fill, is the only source of heat
– How much money do you think you need to change your life?
Rusa: Oh, it’s hard to say. Now we live on 150 lari. Well, and a little more, if my mother earns something there… Maybe, if I had an income of 600 lari, I would be immensely happy. Do you think it’s a lot?
– No! I think, this is very little for one family. What would you spend this money on?
Ruso: I would put aside 200 GEL for education. I would also save up for a sewing machine, fabrics, and threads. If I hadn’t been able to attend courses, I would have learned by myself, from YouTube. Oh, I would have sewn so many beautiful dresses for Barbare.
“I promise, I will sew the most beautiful dresses for you. The ones I dreamed of myself”
Diana: My poor daughter suffered so much. I also feel guilty about her. I had to fight for her. I had to take her out of there by force. But I also kept thinking: “What will people say?” And people keep talking anyway.
– Diana, please tell our readers what you need first of all to make your life a little bit easier?
Diana: Look, Barbare’s hands are frozen. And we ran out of gas in the cylinder. I can’t even heat the water to pour it into the bottle. She calms down when she hugs a warm bottle. You see, she has not calmed down since you came, she keeps crying. If a miracle happens and it will be possible to bring gas to this room, it will be a salvation for us! Our neighbors have gas at their building, but it is not brought to us.
– Feel free to say what else do you need in addition to gas!
Diana: We also need beds. My son and I sleep on the floor, he sleeps on a mattress, I sleep on linoleum. Rusa and her daughter sleep on a bed, which is about to fall apart. We need blankets and pillows. I really need clothes and diapers for my granddaughter. Since we have no food and there is nothing to spoil, we don’t need a refrigerator. Although it happened that they gave us frozen foodstuffs, and I did not know where to store them.
– Do you have any other dream?
Diana: I am embarrassed to ask, but our biggest common dream is a TV set. I know it’s ridiculous in my state to ask for luxuries. But at least we can get distracted by this in the evenings. I asked the state many times to help us at least with rent, to cover at least half of expenses, but they say: “No way”, that’s it. So, what to do? We have nothing of our own. We are alone in this world, and no one cares about us. If we starve to death, they will probably find it out next week, after realizing that the crying of a child did not disturb anyone for a long time. We are poor and unfortunate, nobody needs us. No one!
***
What do you mean – no one needs you? You have not yet seen the strength of our unity. We have already proved many times that we care – that we are not a state. We are strangers, not relatives! We are closer. We are the most distant, but the most dear. We – strangers – feel your pain. Today, together with you, we dream of a sewing machine and beautiful dresses. Together with you we dream of a warm house and a cozy bed. We dream of delicious food and TV, which you, Diana, do not even dare to dream of. We will do everything in our power. We will give you a spark and fuel and we are sure that you can start and put your life in the right direction yourself!
If you would like to visit this family and meet these wonderful people, here is their address: Mtskheta municipality, Tserovani village.
Rusa will charge you with optimism, and if you bring delicious fruits and sweets to little Barbara, she will stroke your cheek and maybe even kiss you.
Every time you can help someone, just do it and rejoice that God answers someone’s prayers through you!
We are sure that together we can warm them up and give them confidence in the future.
