“Terrible monsters with huge teeth bite me”
Three-year-old Anastasia falls into tantrums when she hears that it is time to sleep. She begs her mother not to put her to bed, because what she fears the most in the world is not the evil wolf, or the monster, but her own bed. “There is something with teeth that bites me. And then I cry a lot, a lot” the baby tells us and points to the bed with horror.
“I don’t want to sleep! These terrible bugs will eat me”
Svetlana: Bedbugs appeared in this old mattress. I can’t get rid of them. We’ve been sleeping in a chair for several months now. Anastasia never goes to bed. Recently, she was bitten so badly… I thought the bugs just wanted to eat her.
– Why not to throw it away?
Svetlana: I have to throw away a bed and bedding. Where to sleep then? I try to air them, dry them, but these creatures are impossible to kill. It seems that every day there are more and more of them. If I throw them away, where to sleep then? I can’t throw away anything.
“If I throw away the mattress I will have to sleep on these springs.”
– I see, your income does not let you buy anything new.
Svetlana: When our mother died, my brother and I were left completely alone. Mom died seven years ago. I just turned 16 and my brother was 11. We have no relatives. We stayed with one neighbor, then with another. Sometimes our relatives came to visit us. I have no idea how we managed to go through that. Everything we’ve got is this room and things in it. We have nothing else. We get a social allowance of 150 GEL. It’s not enough for anything. Before Anastasia was born, I worked in a shop. There I met my baby’s father.
“Anastasia is the best thing I have in my life. Although her dad wanted me to get rid of her.”
– Tell me about that in more detail.
Svetlana: Eh, this is what happens when you believe in fairy tales, when there is no one to explain to you that people are different and that you don’t always need to trust people. Mommy, I miss you so much. When I worked in a shop my mother was no longer alive. One young man came there, and he showed interest in me. I liked him very much. Then I knew that I was pregnant. He told me to get rid of my baby, but I could not do that. So Anastasia was born. Of course, it was very hard for me both mentally and physically to become a mother at the age of 20, when there is no one around, no one to support you, and everyone just points the finger at you and condemns. It’s very hard…
“Anastasia is only mommy’s princess”
– But you have this little princess and I’m sure you don’t regret that.
Svetlana: Oh, dear! Anastasia is the best thing I have in my life. I just can’t give her anything but a bed full of bedbugs. (Cries)
– What can we do to make your life better?
Svetlana: Please, first of all I beg you to buy bed and bedding for us. We also need a cabinet. I will throw away all the old things, will clean everything and we will sleep calmly.
Svetlana does her best to keep this tiny room tidy. But these terrible bugs are about to eat them.
– What about groceries or maybe utensils? Maybe your baby still needs diapers?
Svetlana: No, I raised Anastasia without diapers. It’s an incredible money to me. I was absolutely unable to afford that. It was just wasting money. Of course, we need groceries. A social canteen helps us a lot. But the child does have neither fruits nor dairy products. My brother collects scrap metal and brings fruits for his niece. She is so happy! She adores both her uncle and fruits.
– Can I look around your home?
Svetlana: Well, home is a big word. We got this room from our parents. You can see for yourself what’s going on here. We can’t even build a small wall to separate toilet from the rest of the room. The toilet is installed right in the room.
It’s hard even to imagine what’s behind this curtain.
Toilet is screened off by a curtain, right in the room! Have you ever seen that?
– Stop! What did you say?
Svetlana: You heard it right. Toilet is screened off by a curtain. You won’t guess if you don’t know that. Here it is. We can’t build a wall or install a door. How can we do that with 150 lari? We pay for utilities, buy food. God forbid if baby needs medications. Anastasia had temperature yesterday, but we had no money to buy her medications. So we called an ambulance.
“You can’t dream about anything when you are unable to buy an antipyretic for your child”
– I am shocked! I have never seen anything like that. I think you need your bathroom to be arranged along with the beds.
Svetlana: Is it possible?
– There is nothing impossible for good people. Maybe you have some dreams that seem impossible to you?
Svetlana: I don’t even know. To be honest, I never dream, I am not used to that. I can never say what I want for myself. Probably, I want nothing. Now the only thing I worry about is that my daughter has food, that I can dress her and put her in a clean bed. That’s it. This is my ultimate dream.
– Maybe you want to address our readers? What would you say to single mothers?
Svetlana: I can’t say anything. I talked too much today. I don’t like to talk. But I will say one thing: “Be careful and don’t trust to everyone! Take care of your parents…”
“What to do? How to make my daughter happy?”
– Well, Svetlana. We will ask for you. The entire Georgia will know about your problems. Since now you are no longer alone. Count that you have many new friends!
Svetlana: I hope so! To be honest, I don’t believe in anything good. Sometimes it seems to be that some people are born for suffering, they have no right to be happy. Me too… But my girl must be happy!
