„Our house cries when it rains. It will die soon, right?“ – thinks out loud a four-year-old baby girl
REPOST RIGHT AWAY, MY GOOD MAN! HELP YOUR FRIENDS TO GET CLOSER TO THE WORK OF MERCY!
The house where the large Makharashvili family lives is very old and is about to collapse. The roof leaks – it pours inside just like outside. Four-year-old Salome puts her tiny hands under the water flowing from the ceiling and tells us: “Watch how quickly they fill up. My house is crying. It will die soon. When it rains and winds at night, I don’t sleep because I’m afraid.”
Saba is afraid too. Mom is always nearby, but you hear such terrible sounds, like in a cave …
“Mom, it’s not going to rain soon, is it?”
Lia Makharashvili has five children. Her family is socially disadvantaged. It is hard to survive on that meager allowance that the state gives to this family. “Children ask for bread and butter, and you give them just bread saying that tomorrow you will butter it. But tomorrow never comes because you have such a debt in the store that you would not be able to cover it even with your two-month allowance. Imagine what a mother feels at this time!” – Lia tells us with tears in her eyes. “Besides that, we live in an almost destroyed house.”
– Lia, tell us about your trouble.
Lia (40-year-old): I was so embarrassed to disturb you – I do not want to become a burden for anyone. But we found ourselves in a terrible situation. Our house is collapsing on our heads, literally. And we have nowhere to go. One day, the storm breaks, and the ceiling will fall on our heads. Every night I pray that I don’t wake up in ruins.
“We’ll end up in the street soon”
The ceiling is damaged, it is leaking from the ceiling in every corner
– Of course, you can’t fix the roof when the social allowance is your only income.
Lia: We can’t even dream about that. Roof needs to be completely changed. But where to get money for that? When winter comes, my heart breaks with fear. I don’t know whether we will survive it. Firewood has become so expensive. How can we buy them? Even if this house doesn’t collapse, we will freeze anyway.
Saba (4-year-old): I don’t want to freeze. Then the legs go numb. In a fairy tale, freezing is good, but it turns out to be very bad in real life.
– Why is it good in a fairy tale?
Saba: Because it does not hurt. They don’t starve in a fairy tale. And I want bread and butter, a very big piece.
Salome (4-year-old): I love cake. Mom told me that we would have it for my birthday, but we did not have it. Saba behaved badly. (Salome and Saba are twins. – Ed.)
“I’ve always been an adult because I didn’t have toys”
Saba: In truth, mom did not have money to buy it.
– Don’t worry, you will certainly have it for your next birthday!
Giorgi (9-year-old): Mom always says the same as you. (Smiles.)
– Giorgi, Salome and Saba want a cake. What are you dreaming about?
Giorgi: I want a nice school bag. And also, a phone to call my mother when the lessons end early. And I want sweets, and a bicycle. But, do you know what I want most of all? Our house not to collapse!
“Lord, make sure that our house does not collapse!”
Lia: Giorgi’s school is far away. Sometimes the lessons finish early, and I pick him up.
– Do the kids got to the kindergarten?
Lia: Oh, no. I take them with me. There is no kindergarten in our village. It is only in our neighbor village, four kilometers away.
Saba: I want to go to the kindergarten, there is a lot of toys. I have no toys. I want a ball, a big ball.
Salome: And I want a Minnie Mouse toy. But I will put her to sleep under my bed.
– Why there?
Salome: So that it does not get wet when it flows from the roof.
– Lia, do your relatives help you?
Lia: My husband and I have long lost our parents, we are orphans. Who else will worry about you, except for the parents?! Everyone is having a hard time. Such a life has come that it is hard for everyone.
You see reflection of poverty everywhere!
It has been 23 years since Malkhaz and I have been together, coping with difficulties alone. He has always worked hard. And here is the result: his spine hurts, and it is hard for him to lift weights. But he still tries – he works as a shepherd.
“Sometimes my spine hurts so unbearably that I think it will twist me.”
Malkhaz (47-year-old): It is very hard when you cannot support your family. With the pennies that I get working as a shepherd, I can only buy bread for my children. But I can’t sit back and watch my family go hungry. Sometimes my spine hurts so badly that I think it will twist me. I can’t live without painkillers. And Lia either. She has a kidney problem.
When we got married, she took care of my old grandmother. It was then that she started having these problems. Her one kidney barely worked. She gave birth to twins through a c-section. Thank God for saving all three of them.
– Did you go to a doctor?
Malkhaz: What’s the point? They prescribe you tons of pills, which you’ll be never able to buy. How to keep the children then?
Salome wants to help her mom with laundry
– Do the local authorities help you in any manner?
Malkhaz: I wrote them many times, but they did not take our problems to heart. They settled comfortably in their warm and cozy homes and do not understand what a huge problem we are facing. This house will not withstand the coming winter and will collapse on our heads. When we found ourselves in a hopeless situation, we decided to address you. You are our last hope! I have read a lot about your good deeds. I know that you unite all good and reliable people. I believe they will help us to get out of this trouble. I don’t want my family to end up without the roof over their heads in winter. I don’t want that!
Giorgi, do you study well at school?
Giorgi: I want to study well, but Saba and Salome do not let me to, they bother me all the time.
– Don’t blame your brother and sister…
Lia: We all huddle in one room now, there is no other way. Giorgi doesn’t even have his space in the house for studies, there is nothing to say about his own room. Saba is very mischievous. I take him to the neighbors so that Giorgi can study.
School will start soon, and he will need so many things. How can I prepare him for school when our house is collapsing on our heads, and I don’t know what happens tomorrow.
